Here's a dumb beginner's question.

I see folks get air vent covers but not sure why. They must be worth it. Can someone enlighten me?

And I can't remember the brand name that everyone seems to like. Someithing like Maxxair?

Yes, Maxxair seems to the most commonly used. They are used so you can open your vent all summer and winter (in some places) to keep the air moving. Having your roof vents open without one will let in the rain. Makes you able to have the air moving in the RV at all times. ?We wouldn't be without them.

They allow you to open your vents while it is raining without worrying about rain coming in.

Because the Maxxairs are somewhat flexible, they also protect the original vents from hail damage.
You may want to check the Camco covers sold at places such as Walmart. They are $19.97 each.
Either way you go, it is a good solid addition to your rig.

Thanks all. Makes sense now.

Another benefit is the ability to leave the vent open when traveling. Without the cover, they can blow off or get damaged from the wind.

I heard that can cause some negative pressure in your black tank, sucking in some of those "nasty fumes" we all try to avoid.

We haven't had that problem. Since we normally camp in places that may be 10 - 15 degrees cooler than home, it's nice to get there, open up the rig and not find we brought the valley heat with us

I just climbed on the top and installed 2 of the MaxAir covers yesterday - wish I had known about the $19 ones as I paid $33 plus - they were fairly simple to put on. Why: so as to be able to keep one or both of the vents open and not worry about the rain coming in.

I don't remember seeing them at Wally World. Next time I camp out there I'll go in and have a look. It's the least I could do considering the free lodging and the ability to dump my black tank in the storm drain.

(JUST KIDDING!)
