Currently stuck in Whitehorse,YT with a 5th wheel and a 2004 Ford F350 diesel that needs a new engine - interested in opinions of how many of you would go the used route (was told at least 8k before install - has to be shipped from southern Canada or new (25k after being shipped up and installed) - prices are approximate and because of our remote location we have no room to negotiate or shop around - we are from Florida so staying here is not an option - except for the engine problem the truck is in great shape though it does have 154,000 miles on it - it's a king ranch with nice features - I can afford to go either way though the 25K really hurts - can't trade it in because it does not run plus there is nothing here to trade it in on - just found this out and trying to get some other thoughts - Bob
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR INPUT - found a refurbished engine in Whitehorse at Horseman Mechanical that has been upgraded/improved
in 4 areas - will be installed by the Ford Dealer - this was our best route to go due to our location and what is available - if you have never been here you have no idea of what it is like - it is a beautiful area with the greatest people but your options are limited - Whitehorse has a population of only 25,000 people according to their Welcome to Whitehorse sign yet they are the capital city of the Yukon Territory- I looked at all the options you guys suggested 20 times over - I know there are those of you who agree or disagree with our choice but I want to thank all of you for your help and your concern - will post one more time when we leave town next week - Bob and Vicki

used is ok if you can verify miles, condition, etc.
What about a used truck? Any option there?

You always take less of a beating in buying/selling used.
Me, I think I would find either a used truck that would get me south of the border, or hire someone to get me south. Then look for a good deal on a final replacement.

Man - tough decision. horrendous upcost to finally get that engine.
I had a transmission go on the road - 6K, and I opted for new and was on the road the next day, however I didn't get beat up too bad on trade.

Used. But it hurts either way. That is low miles to junk a motor. Even though I could afford new I would go with used if it has some sort of guarantee.

I'm curious as to why you need a new engine. I've never owned a diesel but have heard they don't even break in until 100k miles. Did you buy it new or used? 154k miles is a very short life for a diesel engine. Is this business you're dealing with on the up-and-up?.....

So, used is 8k plus install cost or 25k new. Either way it is still the 6.0L, but used seems a lot more questionable. Think I would look at flatbedding both truck and trailer some place where you have more options.

I agree with Sarman, nothing wrong with good used if you can verify condition, mileage etc before shipping.
Why cant you get a short block from Edmonton for a decent price?

Sorry to hear you are in such a tough spot.
Personally, I don't think I would repair it. At least not where you are. For an '04 with 150k miles, the used engine plus installation is going to be very close to equalling the value of the truck. It isn't worth repairing at those rates. Either ship it home, or sell it for salvage.
Absolutely no way should you put 25k plus into that truck!

When the 6.0 burn up they are scrap. You can't use a short block because the heads are too bad. I know this sounds easy for me but I would go with a new one if you want to keep this truck for a long time. If you plan on getting rid of it soon then go the used route.
After replacing it I would do all the little fixes that make the 6.0 bullet proof.
