Just north of Whitehorse, where we live, the elk are busy creatures. Yesterday on our way home from Whitehorse at about 7:30 p.m., we witnessed them harassing an Airstream being towed by a truck with Alaska plates.

Of course, everyone came to a stop!

This was a few miles from our new place. The other day the elk were hanging around the cabin though. Apparently our new property is located in the "no hunting" zone so they find comfort here.

Brakes on as the elk pass in front of the truck ...

Brakes off ... need to get to Alaska!

Later in the evening at about 10:15 p.m. the sunset was looking sweet up the valley, as viewed from our deck:

Very pretty! We have herds of elk here on US 12 near White Pass that mill around in the road causing hazards to vehicles. A sheriff's deputy was killed last year when he hit one at night. I've come close to hitting one several times in daylight. They aren't timid.

Beautiful pictures. We just returned from a tour of southern B.C.,no wildlife encounters but scenery and weather were perfect.

We don't have Elk except in the northeast corner of the state.
We do have a multiplying deer herd. Saturday we encountered two Does with two fawns each, still spotted. The first family just stood, in the road and allowed us to pass by slowly. The second was along a highway and never paid us no mind. This was mid day. At dusk we saw numerous deer, on our way home. We've hit deer with all our cars, until last year and this year. Most time little damage since we were on the lookout. But it was quite expensive for daughter one year, and wife's new car. three years ago we a family that hit an Elk, in Colorado with their new motorhome. they were at the factory to get the front cap replaced. they had to replace quite a bit mechanically and structurally already. That Elk did a number on that coach.

Sue t.

Are you the Sue T. who has just become the head of the Yukon Quest? Our local paper had an article about the registration for the race and mentioned a Sue T. who was born in Whitehorse and recently moved to Whitehorse from BC. I immediately thought of you.

If so, congratulations!!

Guilty as charged. I was recently appointed the Executive Director of the Yukon Quest's Canada office in Whitehorse. The Yukon Quest is a 1,000 mile international dog race run between Whitehorse & Fairbanks. The only one of its kind in the world!

In February 2012, the race starts in Fairbanks and finishes in Whitehorse. February 2013, the 30th anniversary of the race, it will start in Whitehorse and finish in Fairbanks.

All my Alaskan friends need to tread carefully now ... I'll be searching for volunteers in the New Year!

BTW, if anyone wants tips on winter camping in an RV, just ask. We drove north to Yukon twice with temps to -40. So if you want to drive the Alaska Highway and see a great event, just let me know.
