I wear a 3/4 helmet in the summer and a modular helmet when it gets cool enough to wear one... 70 degrees and below. I am having a very hard time finding a helmet that fits me. I have tried dozens of helmets at over a dozen stores and even motorcycle shows but there is only manufacturer who even gets close. GMax XXL. I've used a Dremel tool to modify the foam inside, which I'm told one should never do, but I'd rather do that then no helmet at all.

I find it very frustrating as surely I've seen bigger heads then mine. One would think that helmet makers would make sizes for most everyone. I often wonder if this is why I see so many without helmets now a days.

I rode my first motorcycle when I was about 13 years old.. that was back in 1955.

As the years went by I finally started wearing a helmet.. and when they invented the "Full-Face" helmets I got one.... BAD CHOICE.

It cut off my peripheral vision, it dampened outside noises like car horns, sirens, etc... and it made breathing difficult which fogged up my eyeglasses..

BUT... the one thing that made me throw away that full-face helmet was seeing a rider's neck broken because he was wearing one when he wrecked...

I don't remember all the details in the report but basically it said that the full-face helmet was jerked sideways and because it was covering the rider's entire head, there was no way for it slip sideways on his head like a Open Face (1/2 or 3/4) style helmet has been known to sometimes do in a wreck....

...thus when the full faced helmet twisted, so did the rider's head... breaking his neck.

With well over a million plus miles riding all sizes and brands of motorcycles all across America, I have always worn an "Open-Faced" with a snap on sun visor and if it was raining really hard I sometimes snapped on a "Wind Shield".. (that plastic snap on wrap around thing)..

But as soon as the rain stopped the wind shield went back into the trunk or bags..

Please NOTE:.... I am NOT saying a person should or should not wear any particular style of helmet ... that choice is up to each person..

But I am a strong believer in wearing some type of helmet when on a motocycle... whether driver or passenger.

I have never even been close to any kind of accident while riding my bikes due to three things...

* God was watching over me
* Lady Luck was riding with me
* I always pretended someone was out to kill me and I kept looking for that person.

This is just my personal opinion based on over 55 years of riding motorcycles...

and to each his own...

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

I have to admit that when I started riding, in the late 60s, there was no helmet law and I rarely wore one. Later in my cycling career I bought both a full-face and a police-style helmet. I almost always wore the latter since the former felt too claustrophibic.

When my sons started riding years later, I made sure they had full-face helmets from the beginning, and they had no problem wearing them.

At present, none of us ride, and I’ve given it up for good. When either son starts again – as I’m sure at least one will – it will be with a full-face helmet.

IIRC in most states you cannot register/license a 4 wheel ATV (nor 3 wheel for that matter) for road use due to EPA regulations for emissions. There IS one loophole, in some states if you are using an ATV as a farm vehicle it is permitted on the roads with an ORANGE triangle posted on the back of it and you are only allowed to go so many miles from the farm's base of operations.

And speaking of ATVs on the road, I saw one going AGAINST the flow of traffic on the SHOULDER a few days ago in Idaho now talk about STUPID

I agree 2 wheel/3 weel/4 whelled anything are dangerous, doesn't make them unsafe its the operator/driver who makes them unsafe.

and IIRC AFAIK 3 wheel ATVs are still permitted to be operated at least in Oregon & Washington, manufacturers don't make them anymore because people were getting stupid with them. IF you know how to ride a 3 wheel ATV properly then you will KNOW the risks and will have the skills & better understanding to deal with possible issues (that doesn't mean they won't happen).

My uncle still rides...he won't wear a full-face helmet. It limits vision, his glasses fog up, he can't hear anything, and it's sweltering. He wears an open helmet that doesn't cover his ears, and goggles.

When she rode (sold the bike), Liz wore a full-face helmet.

In Montana, ATVs can be made street legal, and a motorcycle license plate will be issued for them. The EPA has nothing to do with it.
I see them quite frequently running around town, but I don't see them on the freeway!
I think all that is required to make an ATV street legal is headlight with hi/lo beam, brake lights and taillights. Some ATVS are street legal right out of the crate! Turn signals may or may not be required, I don't know.
When I get my Kawasaki put together, I will be checking on what is required, so I can make it street legal.
IIRC, three wheeler ATVs were outlawed by the CPSC because too many people were treating them like toys, and allowing small children to ride them without proper instruction. There were too many injuries and deaths, so the "nanny state" stopped production (just like "Yard Darts).

I hear the USAF spends thousands of dollars making flight helmets that fit the pilot's head specifically they are engineered that way. Dunno if it would be worth the cost of getting a helmet like that

Interesting, I read somewhere that WA DOL/DMV and OR DMV will not register vehicles that do not meet EPA requirements, since both these states require emissions testing on newer vehicles in certain areas.

I don't know about Montana, they have some pretty crisp skies I don't think they need to worry about the EPA yet!

When I first started riding people were buying $10 helmets. I was told the helmet costs what the head is worth. $10 helmet, $10 head.

There was a protest ride in June against helmet laws. One person on the ride died. No helmet.
