I have only got our fridge to operate on gas one time, and that was when the tank had just been filled. The other times I have tried, it sounds as if it is lighting, but does not stay lit. I would like to start it on gas so that when we leave the storage area it will be cooling while we are on the road. We have had our fifth wheel for 3 years, but the fridge has only worked that one time on gas. Does anyone else have this problem, and am I doing something wrong?
Any ideas would be appreciated, and thanks in advance for any help.
I would only use the gas setting for trips close by, not long trips where we would have to stop for diesel.

You didn't say what type of fridge you have or how old it is. However, it sounds like you might have some rust and crud that's dropped down the stack and is sitting atop your burner. Take the sheet metal cover off the burner area and clean the actual burner thoroughly. Check your fridge maintenance instructions for the actual step by step procedure. Be sure you DO NOT put a wire or sharp hard object into the gas orifice. Your maintenance procedures will also specify how to position your igniter and what the burner flame should and should not look like. If you don't have a copy, the maintenance instructions are available on line. Do a Google search.

I might ask do you have a fully charged battery hooked up and if it has a disconnect switch, is it ON? To operate a Fridg on propane you also need 12 volts of battery to operate the control board and the igniter. You also might try and light a stove top burner and let it burn until it burns steady. This will bleed the air out of the propane line and make it easier for the fridg to light. Check it out and let us know.

Run the bad propane out of the line by lighting your stove first or even the water heater. Even with crud on the burner it should light, but not get hot enough.

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

I suspect you are turning the LP valves off while the trailer is in storage and this puts a lot of air in the lines which take quite a while to get cleared so gas reaches the burner. Light the range top to assist in removing air in lines and stop turning the gas off when not using the RV and your fridge will more than likely operate just fine.

Each time you try to light it, the sequence is a dozen or so tries then it goes into "lock out" mode until it's turned off and back on again for another series of attempts. If the air is in the lines it may take five or six attempts before it lights and runs and each cycle will take between five and ten minutes to complete.

Once you DO get it to light, leave the LP on to prevent the problem in the future. I've had folks tell he that it is "dangerous" to leave the gas on and my response is "and yet you SLEEP in the trailer with it on?"

Good luck / Skip

Skip - Mine are right under the bed in my fifth wheel and same on the POPUP as we always sleep on that end... We sure like to live dangerously dont we...

I always run my fridge on DC in the POPUP when enroute to the camp sites. You certainly need a head start on keeping it cool enough to use once you get there...

You could also have minute rust particles inside the burner tube. That has to be taken out and the rust particles removed. Trust me, using a vacuum cleaner is only, at best, a short term solution.
