At the agricultural inspection station just inside the border we made the normal stop. However this time, in addition to the normal plants/fruits questions, they wanted to know if we had any firewood. Does anyone know what they are looking for? It's about the bugs. Billions of dollars worth of agriculture are at stake, Walnuts, fruits...and also Pine Trees and other forest trees. The beetles don't just lay eggs and hatch out destructive larvae..but in some cases carry deadly to tree funguses. My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. It makes sense, really, as we continue to spread pests from one area to another. Firewood houses many different types of pests, bark beetles being one. Looking to prevent transfer of pests. Lots of States are starting to implement the "no out of State firewood" policy for the very same reason. We've never stopped at an inspection station, in any State.
