Hi Everyone
We crossed the CA./Oregon border on Monday. At the agricultural inspection station just inside the border we made the normal stop. However this time, in addition to the normal plants/fruits questions, they wanted to know if we had any firewood. Does anyone know what they are looking for?
Thanks
Bill and Carole

Down here, the campgrounds have a policy of no out of area firewood allowed. It's about the bugs.

Cereal Leaf Beetles, Pine Shoot Beetles, Asian Long Horned Beetles, Walnut Twig Beetles and more are all on the list of destructive insects they're trying to keep out of California.

Billions of dollars worth of agriculture are at stake, Walnuts, fruits...and also Pine Trees and other forest trees. The beetles don't just lay eggs and hatch out destructive larvae..but in some cases carry deadly to tree funguses.

"ARE THERE RESTRICTIONS FOR BRINGING FIREWOOD INTO THE STATE?

Like all plant material, firewood is subject to inspection for insects and disease symptoms when it arrives at our border stations—if insects or disease symptoms are found, the wood may be rejected. Because of the high likelihood of wood-boring insects being present in all shipments of firewood, travelers are strongly discouraged from moving firewood out of the local area from where it was cut. For more information visit: www.dontmovefirewood.org." http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/phpps/PE/ExteriorExclusion/borders_faq.html

Bark beetles...more States are prohibiting the transfer of wood from one State to another. It makes sense, really, as we continue to spread pests from one area to another. Firewood houses many different types of pests, bark beetles being one. California is trying to protect it's redwood and oak forests....Dennis

In some NYS campgrounds, they are passing out magnetic bumper stickers that say "Don't move firewood, it BUGS me!".

Firewood would be my guess. FINALLY many states are starting to restrict it's transport but sadly it MAY already be too late to save our forests.

Yup...what the others said. Looking to prevent transfer of pests. Lots of States are starting to implement the "no out of State firewood" policy for the very same reason. I see the notice on many of the forest & state parks we stay at.

Pardon me, but, "At the agricultural inspection station just inside the border we made the normal stop"
What's that all about? We've never stopped at an inspection station, in any State.
