I am in Sheridan Wy now and will be leaving for Fishing Bridge Campground in the morning. Can anyone give me road conditions for Hwy 14? I am going to be going either 14 or 14A to Cody. I have been told that 14A is NOT the better route. Can anyone advise on current conditions ?

Thanks.

The concerns with 14 or 14A have to do with the grades, not transient conditions (at least not at this time of the year). In the direction you are going, the climb is the same. 14A is notorious for a steep downhill grade, though both end up dropping the same.

16 is generally regarded as the easiest route across the Big Horn Mtns, but it probably is not worth driving back south to take that instead. I'd say, take 14 and stop to see the Shall Canyon waterfall - unless you want to see the medicine wheel off of 14A.

Not so- a major landslide has recently occurred on HWY 14- Never assume transient conditions do or don't exist in the mountains.

With all due respect- that is a foolish notion. Conditions ALWAYS change in the mountains.

You don't say what kind of rig you have, but with the mudslides taking out Hwy 14 and the steep grades on 14A, you might be better to head down to Buffalo and take Hwy 16 over the pass.

A quick check of WT DOT road closures doesn't show U.S. 14 closed now, so they may have it "fixed", but I'd still check before you head up the mountain. As of a few days ago the Highway Dept was attempting to build a temporary road around the slide area near Shell Falls. Whether it's okay for big rigs and campers I don't know. It was closed completely for a week or two.

There are falling rock advisories for that area and also between Cody and the East Gate, so beware.

Oops, I should have remembered that both times I drove 14 I hit road work. Once paving above Shell canyon, and later a complete reworking of the approach segment from the west.

is a Cody news item that describes the detour quickly built above the slide on 14. It is paved so RV shouldn't have a problem.

I expect there were notices at the start of 14 at both ends during the full closure.
