Be prepared!
The department responsible for Canada's national parks will soon release its proposed new user fees for next year, ranging from entry and camping, to the cost of a fishing licences.
A Parks Canada official said camping fees are too low.
(Globe and Mail - july 5, 2011)
Well......we just came back from a cross Canada trip, British Columbia to Nova Scotia and back. A total of 15.300 km. We were gone 50 days. Spend 27 nights at Walmart, 3 nights at truck stops and 20 nights at campsites. Out of the 20 nights at the campsites, we spend 3 nights in private campsites (lousy experiences!), 17 were spend at federal and provincial campsites.
We found camping fees very high. With the high price of diesel and gasoline I think Walmart will be getting very busy next year.
Some parks in Ontario are to high priced, first you pay to get in the "park", and on top of that you pay for your "campsite". That's for four people. Don't show up with four children!

What do you think is enough?
Ontario PP's cost's are paid close to over 80% by those who use it. The results are that Ontario has closed NO parks while in the US many States have had to do just that.
What do you think the Canadian tax payer should be on the hook for so that camp sites are less expensive?

Out here in The Maritimes in June Parks Canada did an 'introduction to camping weekend' for recent immigrants. The purpose, they said, was to introduce new residents to how many Canadians spend their weekends.
Now, to my way of thinking it is also a way to try to get more rate payers for the parks.
Re. Cape Breton Highlands National Park I last stayed in 2 cgs in 1995. Conditions in both were so crowded and appalling that I vowed to never stay overnight in that park ever again. & I wrote and told Parks Canada what was wrong. They replied in a very city-ish ignorance as to what a campground should be.
Still, there could be others much better than I at giving Parks Canada input and feedback about what the camping public really wants.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

It costs money to support that lady playing a harp by the grand piano at the Lake Louise lodge. And folks enjoy that kind of nature while sipping their cocktails. And that is the way Parks Canada wants it (apparently).

Talk to the animals. They will talk back to you. If you don't talk to the animals, they won't talk back to you, and you will fear and when you fear animals you will destroy, and if you destroy the animals, you will destroy yourself.

Camping in National Parks in Canada is very expensive when you factor in the park entrance fee, camping fee, and fire permit fee (should you wish to have a campfire). We still end up camping at least a week/year in the National Parks though, it's just something we enjoy doing (this year will be the third year in a row for us in Jasper, also hitting Waterton, first year in several we won't go to Kootenay as Redstreak is effectively closed for upgrades). But, being in Yellowstone right now I'm surprised at how cheap the National Parks are in the USA in comparison to Canada. We've saved over $100 alone just on the entry fee.

No - Parks Canada has no part in funding staff at the Chateau and similar places. To the contrary - the hotel owners pay lease fees to the Park.

Iam with shum on this one ,there has been no increase since 2008.
All parks (in southern On ) are booked solid, provincal parks will follow this lead ,count on it.

I have to admit, unfortunately the price hike is desperately needed (based on my experiences out here).
Everytime I go to Banff, the place is absolutely swarming with people/cars/rv's.
Services for all these people cost alot of money. While I don't think the increase should be passed on to the everyday taxpayer, I do believe increased user fees are the way to go. Services for a national park, are not something that is a "set" fee. The more people that show up on a weekend, the more it costs immediately, and it's (for the most part) unpredictable.
The one thing I absolutely hate right now about the parks, is If I don't book 90 days in advance, chance of getting a camping site on a weekend are slim to none. Maybe this will change that. While I hate paying more, I will because it's about the experience and seeing my son's eye's light up when he sees a bear for the first time.
Paoli, I wonder how your train of thought works for travel agencies? Airport taxes are going up, OH NO!!, what about the poor people who won't be able to fly to Hawaii for thier winter vacation anymore... This is no different.
There are many other ways for the unemployed to enjoy nature cheaply, there are 100 of thousands of acres of crown land that's free and almost as beautiful (if not more).
And like shum02 said, it's a priviledge not a right.
