Yup, just get the card. We have State Farm and they just give us a special card when we go to Canada. Takes maybe 5 minutes at our agent. Likely could do by mail, but our agent is nearby, friendly, and down right cute!

We depart Friday. My State Farm agent just e-mailed the card to me as a PDF.

Sounds like I'm in trouble! I was planning to cross the border tomorrow...or is that already today? Progressive Ins. said my regular insurance was fine but I could get additional policy but needed original typed card, not faxed. But then they faxed me one anyway. Called Canadian Border Patrol and they said this type of policy was NOT required for enty into Canada. I can't find anything written anywhere about this requirement. Just info on proof of registration, passport, etc. I won't be able to sleep tonight worrying about it. but can't do anything with this being Sun and then the holiday on the 4th. Thanks for input. Sally

We crossed into Canada a few days ago. How many travelling with you sir. Just the two of us. Where are you going? To canada, then Alaska and then back to Australia> Can I come with you??
Do you own the vehicle? Yes, Montana LLC. Any firearms? No, just the bear spray. Hopefully left most of the guns behind on the other side of the border.
Thanks, have a real nice trip.

Err, is the customs post down the road a bit??
No sir, this is the whole bit right here. Have a nice day.

Just as well we decided not to take any notice of all the advice about the things they MIGHT ask for and MIGHT not allow through. My view is that it is better to declare anything they ask about and be prepared to pay duty or have it confiscated than to try and second-guess what is required.

I did have the special card (emailed to me) plus heaps more liability cover than required and I did have all the documentation but all he wanted was our passports. Two minutes, tops. Those heading the other way weren't going to get off that easy judging by the huge lines waiting to cross the US border.

The Canadian Non-resident Inter-provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Card isn't for entry into Canada.

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

This question should be directed to your insurance agent rather than to us --- fact always trumps opinion.

Here are some facts---

Not every single insurance agent in the US is familiar with the Canadian Non-resident Inter-provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Card. Back when my agent was new I called to get one, he knew nothing about it. Had to insist he check into it.

Another fact is, you don't have to be an insurance agent to know about the Canadian Non-resident Inter-provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Card.

. . . Just because your agent was uninformed doesn't mean everyone's is.

Still, contact your agent. If he doesn't know the answer, HE's the best one to find it for you.

As Luke Porter has stated along with the Primary Moderator of this section of the forum in a past thread related to this topic....

-A Canadian Non-resident Inter-provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Card isn't for entry into Canada....

-A Canadian Non-resident Inter-provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Card is REQUIRED should you are involved in a vehicle accident....

Other posts have already stated to contact your local agent to issue you a card -free of charge for many- as it is issued for a certain timeframe as I always have one issued for 30 days, although I can request a longer timeframe.

On a Geico policy, I always obtain one free of charge when travelling into Canada, unknown if they charge for an extended period say if it were to be issued for 60 days or more.

In case your local agent states they charge for this card, I would call another local agent and or a central dispatch of the company your covered by to verify there is such a charge, as I am only suggesting this because there are local agents on the take as I ran into this problem in the past and had disclosed my findings as I confronted my local agent from a former company as they reverted back from charging me.

It is best to have that card in possession in case an accident were to happen.... If you do not have that card in case you are involved in an accident - you could have your vehicle confiscated by Canadian Law.

Our agent says we are covered and have to carry a copy of our policy with us. After reading this thread I felt a call to Progressive Insurance was in order. They said a Canadian form is necessary and are faxing me one today.
If it's something new (not mentioned in this thread) I will post the info.

The final word is there to read. The Inter-provincial Proof of Insurance IS needed in Canada , IN CASE of ACCIDENT or TRAFFIC Stop.
Not needed to enter the country. Border agents will not ask for it - it is not a crossing matter.
Check the information in the "clickies at the top of this forum.
