I have towed our '86 tintop 30,000+ miles. Transfer case in neutral and transmission in second gear and go. No need to stop every two hours and run it through the gears with the engine running like Suzuki recommends. At the end of the day if you are not going to unhook and use it start it and run the transmission through the gears to circulate the oil. I use Mobil 1 synthetic in all my gear boxes.Great toad. Only weights 2250#.

What is the logic behind leaving it in second?

I have a 1988 Samurai that I tow sometimes......a Saturn VUE the other times.....

The way I understand the logic behind putting the transmission in second gear is......this puts drag on the gears in the tranny to the point that it pretty much locks it up........that way the transfer case becomes the sacrificial lamb so to speak.....the T-Case is made to self lubricate under tow while the drive shafts are turning......the transmission is not self lubricating being driven by the intermediate drive shaft......

I towed one for many years and too many miles...replaced the engine once then finally sold it for a Saturn. Easy to tow but gutless if your sightseeing in the hill country..........Dennis

You lost me... With the transfer case in neutral how does that put a "load" on the transmission ? With the transfer case in neutral there would be no load on the transmission, or am I missing something ? On my 74' Bronco once the transfer case is in neutral nothing is transferred from the drive line to transmission...

You put in second to keep it from free wheeling, since it is not being lubricated, otherwise some shaft bearings can be damaged.

Definitely underpowered with the original Hitachi carb, but power is considerably better with a new Weber carb. More power can be gained with a Harley carb but that is extremely expensive. If you want even more power you could put in a VW TDI like Jim did.

The reason for putting it in second gear is that is what is in the Samurai owners manual. Transfer case in neutral and transmission in second gear. No other reason except in 30,000 of being towed it has worked.

BTW my VW diesel is not a TDI it is a TD out of a '89 Jetta. The TDI is a very difficult motor to swap. You literally need to get the cars dashboard with the engine to get all the electronic fuel system control pieces you have to have. Its either that or spend $1000.00 for a injection pump converted to manual control. The engine I have with a little bit of injection system tweeking makes 95 hp. Stock is 68 and the Samurai 1.3 is 64 hp. Fun to drive and 40 mpg.

A Weber 32-34 carb, headers and 2" exhaust help the stock 1.3 quite a bit. I chassis dynoed mine with the Weber, 2" exhaust and headers and gained from 49.3 to 64 hp at the rear wheels. Quite noticeable. Zuhwarrie.com has a good Samurai forum. I use Ready Brake on the Sami and it works great.

Jim
