Hello All,

Been awhile since I have been on this forum. We are going to be relocating to North Carolina this summer. Our house in south east Mass is already under aggreement and we are looking forward to leaving. We just purchased a 2011 Silverado 1500 Crew Z71 LT and we are going to go down there the first week in July. We will be staying at the Smithfield KOA in Four Oaks, NC. We will use our Onstar Navigation system, but I was hoping anyone can tell me what bridges/areas/tunnels to avoid so I can have these areas programmed in to the system. I am wondering if I should plan on two days travel time or one. If one, I am estimating a 12-16 hour trip. If I plan on two I am wondering if there is anywhere good to stop for the night right off 95 in say maybe MD or VA? I appreciate any and all advice. Thanks!!

From southeastern Mass, your best route is probably down 95. If that's the way you plan on going the only tunnel to worry about is Baltimore. I'm assuming you have propane in the trailer. You can't go through the tunnel with any decent sized propane tank. 95 through NYC is awful. Try to pick off hour times.

NYC is exactly what I am concerned with... Do I take the Tappanzi or the George Washington bridge?

We never take the George Washington bridge, Tappanzee, Or I 90 is so much easier.

I would suggest 84 to 81 as a much better alternative. Then 66 to 17 to re-connect back to 95 south of DC if you need to get to eastern NC. If you do want to go 95, use the Tappen Zee but be careful of the southern end of the Garden State Parkway.....depending on your height, there are some low overpasses.

Also if you choose 95, you will have to take the J.P. Souza bridge around Baltimore. NO propane in the tunnel...on or off.

We drove from New Bedford to Myrtle beach in May. This time we tried out the Tapanzee - I80, I81 route to VA, then back over to 95. Traffic was certainly much better, but the route SEEMED sooooo much longer. Gorgeous ride in daylight, but terrible at night. I'm not sure we would try that route again.

Coming home on Memorial Day morning we went right up 95 through NYC on the GW bridge at 5am and it was a breeze! I would never do that any any other time though. The Tapanzee is a much better alternative, 99% of the time.

Having travelled that route several times on my trips east I would also recommend 84, 81, 66, 17

The best route will be determined by the day of the week and the time of departure. When we snowbird, we leave on New Year's Day at 0400 and find no traffic over the Geo Washington Bridge, which saves about 25 miles. Leaving SE Mass on any Sunday might provide similar results, and be aware the Tappan Zee can be a traffic-filled route at times. The KOA in Smithfield is a good one; we've used it for our return. As for stops in between, that depends on when you depart (day/time) and how long you want to drive that first day. We've done that route 6 times so I'm familiar with it. Feel free to PM me if you think I can help. Camp on!
