Family restrooms are not just for the handicapped. They actually are more intended for "families", in other words - little Suzy is out for the day with Daddy and little Suzy has to "go". The family restroom enables Daddy to take Suzy in without any embarrassing moments. This is good for handicapped access and for someone of the opposite sex to assist someone with a handicap go into the restroom too. This may or may not come up that often in campgrounds where Mommy may be around to take little Suzy and so many just use the facilities they travel with. It is a trend now in new construction to include one or more - and there is no reason for anyone - even if alone - to not go in if the family restroom is not occupied and the regular restroom's stalls are. Unless "officially" designated as a handicapped restroom and built with handicap accommodations, this is not considered a handicapped restroom and not required by any code or ADA as an intended handicapped restroom can be.

I once saw a dad carry little Suzy into a crowded men's room with his hand firmly clamped over her eyes while he got her into a stall so that she would not get an "early education". This was before family restrooms were common. I have also seen men walk in with a group of little girls and yes, they see a lot more than they should. It is not as much of an issue in a ladies room where it is all stalls - but it is a problem in a mens room.

Just found this site. Hope it helps.

Fantastic! I just did a few test searches, and the results were very promising. My own searching missed it.

Thank you for taking the time to find it and post the link!

I visit public campgrounds almost exclusively east of the Mississippi. All that I have stayed in have had the traditional comfort station setup. I've camped in maybe 8 to 10 private parks over the past 7 years. Two, Sunset King Lake RV Resort in Defuniak Springs, Florida and McIntosh Lake RV Park and Campground in Townsend, GA have had unisex restroom/bath houses. Ahead of their times, perhaps? A very nice feature in my opinion.

While the family facilities we've found so far do have the usual handicapped additions, I certainly can see where families would appreciate them either way.

As for men taking little girls into the men's room, yep, I've not only seen that a few times, but when our granddaughter was 15, and the water heater on our old Class C had died, I once tucked her hair up under a NY Mets baseball cap pulled down low, put her in a matching jacket, and pushed her wheelchair through a thankfully sparsely populated mens room to a shower stall. We had a good laugh about it later on, but I sure was nervous at the time!

Great! That's two more for the list. Thank you!

We're avid mountain bikers, hikers and kayakers-the only reason we even have an RV, is to be able to stay closer to the action in rural areas without having to drive to a hotel. Most of the time when it's shower time, we've spent most of the day in wet clothes from rivers, lakes, creeks, etc. We've probably got all kinds of chemicals on us from bug spray. We're probably going to microwave dinner in a plastic container with carcinogens. We'll probably breathe in bad stuff from the campfire smoke We've risked drowning, broken limbs, dehydration, being stranded, blisters in sweaty shoes and socks, and being killed in a car wreck on the way in or out. I'll risk the shower. Gotta be cleaner than river mud, pesticides, and life in general. Shower shoes, common sense, and anti-bacterial soap. The day I'm afraid of a cement shower, is the day it's time to stop living. The family showers are great for us, makes it a lot easier, and faster, to get us all in, and out.

IMHO if you are in a wheelchair, you should simply accept that there are a few places you can’t go.
But if it were not for the ADA, there would be a lot of places that they could not go!

There is a brand new campground near me (opened last year) that has two "Family" rooms in the back of the regular bath house. That's the first one I've seen in a private campground, but I haven't been looking for them so there may have been others. (Most of the time I never even go in the CG facilities, we just use our own.)

I'm sorry, it looks like I missed the point of this topic.

I thought it was a discussion of general trends, but since you seem to be looking for specific campgrounds, let me add that the new place I'm talking about is Branches of Niagara on Grand Island near Niagara Falls. It's a nice place, with great facilities and location, but it's pricey and the sites are kind of crowded.
