We are leaving Saturday morning for Yellowstone from Ohio. We have to pick up one daughter in St.Louis and another in Rapid City. I usually go through Iowa to I-29 up to I-90 but with I-29 and I-680 closed because of flooding, I am thinking about I-70 from St. Louis to Kansas then US 81 up to Neb and I-90 over to US 83 up to I-90 in South Dakota. Anybody driven this route? Anybody have an other suggestions? Towing a 35ft 5th wheel. Thanks

Hmmmmmmmmm . . . . no, I have never driven that route, but I would be interested to hear what others might say. We are going to Yellowstone from STL in one month. My "planned" route was I-70 to KC, then I-29 North to I-90 West. Now I'm gonna have to pay attention to road conditions . . . . .

Last year we drove I70 to Topeka then route 75 north to route 36. We spent a night at the Potawatomi Indian Casino on 75. On the way home we drove route 2 between Lincoln and Nebraska City. Both were good 2-lane roads.
For your consideration - I70 to Topeka, route 75 north to Nebraska City, route 2 to pick up I80 at Lincoln, near Grand Island, route 281 north to route 2 west to route 385 north to route 79 to Rapid City. While I have only driven the two sections mentioned above, this is the way I would go.
Perhaps someone else with more experience will chime in.

I have been on part of that route coming from Louisiana to the Black Hills. I came up 81 from I-70 to I-80. Good road and not much traffic. I then took I-80 to Ogallala (mm-126) and took 26 to 385 and up 385 to Hill City and 16 to Rapid City. All good roads. If you wish to avoid downtown Ogallala, when you come over the overpass take a left on hwy-30 and go to Airport Rd which intersects SR26-61 and go North to 26. This is where the Oregon Trail crossed the South Platte river and joined up with the Mormon Trail. We stayed overnight at the Country View. It is South of Ogallala and turn left at the John Deere dealer. Not fancy but nice big sites and friendly owner.

I know most folks prefer interstates but we almost never take them from western Illinois to Yellowstone and or Glacier NP. We've made the trip to workamp for 8 summers. We like US Rt. 20 (mostly 2 lane but some 4-lane) which we pick up in Iowa and follow all the way through Nebraska and right to YNP or very close. It is a good, not heavily traveled road and we find it interesting. For Glacier, we like US rt. 2 but that's way north of Yellowstone.

Thanks for all the inputs. I like the Idea of rt 2 through Neb up to 385 then 79 to Rapid City. Anybody know if there are any low bridges on rt 2? I am at 13 feet. The last time I drove I 80 through Neb it was real rough in spots. That's been a few years ago though. I don't mind taking non interstate roads as long as they aren't too congested. Sometimes the back roads are in better shape than the interstates plus I don't drive over 60 mph anyway.
