Wow, sobering thoughts.

This is one reason why I don't leave the dog alone in the trailer.

Glad no one was hurt. Thanks for the reminder to buy two additional fire extinguishers. One for the wall in our bedroom and another for the bed of the truck. These will supplement the one next to the kitchen adjacent to the door.

Properly operating equipment does not cause fires - it takes something being out of whack to cause a fire - something failed. You can't really expect that, and things fail even when you ARE around. Just because your RV burned down doesn't mean you did something wrong.

The things you should make sure are operating are your emergency escape hatches and your fire extinguishers - smoke detectors are the third thing. It only takes five to ten seconds to escape a burning RV, after all - your way out is a couple of steps away, they're just not that big.

Could be one of those refridgerators with the recall due to the fire hazard.

someone already touched on it but to reiterate..know how to use your emergency windows... meaning take it a step further than just knowing which window to point at if asked which is which

fleeing a fire is not the time to stop and read instructions

I'm a retired NYPD cop and my neighbor who was helping me this morning before the Citrus County Deputy came is a retired cop from New Hampshire..........

Neither one of us were able to get within 20 feet of the door to try and break in.....This was long before I took the cell phone picture and the flames weren't so bad.......The heat the fire generated would have killed anyone inside but we wanted to try and check for people anyway........Thank God there was nobody inside because we wouldn't been able to get them out anyway without some sort of fire retardant suit......

Down here in the woods the closest fire station is 15 minutes away and the Firemen didn't come for 20 minutes or so........It doesn't sound like a long time, but this trailer was toast in 10 minutes..

The North-West portion of Florida is mostly rural and we don't have enough tax money to buy fire stations and there aren't many Firemen.......The guys we do have do a great job, but there's just not enough of them and it seems young people don't volunteer to serve in the Department as much as years ago.......It's a real problem.....

An appliance or bad wiring must have caused this and a NORCOLD refrigerator is a good place for the Fire Marshall to look.......I got rid of my Norcold a long time ago.......They are JUNK....

Moved from 5th wheels to Gen'l RVing Issues.
This is something that should be read by all RVers.

We were checking into a COE campground last month (Saylorville Lake in Iowa)on our way home from New Mexico, noted the host had her hand wrapped. In answer to my question she told me her and her husband were both burned when thier 5th wheel burned. She was awakened when her c-pap machine started pumping smoke and she started coughing, 4:00 in the morning. She got out with only her night clothes, her husband got his pants on, luckily had keys in the pockets and he was able to move his tv and car. They lost everything else.
She wore borrowed clothing into WalMart the next day to buy footwear.
Added note, I've never been a big fan of the Red Cross due to a couple bad experiences in the fifties when I was in the service, however, may have to change my thinking....local county sheriff called the Red Cross at 4:00am, a representative came to the campgroung at 4:00 in the morning, got them into a motel room (4 nights) and gave them a $700.00 credit card for necessities. No expectation of repayment. Other hosts and friends supplied them with clothing and housing.
Tragic but still a feel good happening.

When we had our walk through in our first fiver the dealer pointed to the fire extinguisher by the door "See that red thing? If you have a fire that's what you run past on your way out the door."

That said, we have the standard extinguisher by the door, one in the pantry, two in the bedroom, an automatic one in the refer compartment, a big one in an outside compartment (labeled and always unlocked), and one in the truck.
