I have a Ford E-250 Conversion Van and I would like to put a portable toilet in there for the long trips up and down the east coast. My wife must have to pee about every 2 hours so it would be nice to not have to stop every couple hours for a bathroom :-)

I am looking for recommendations on a good product/price and something that will definately contain the waste, not stink up the inside of the van if left in there on a hot day, and is easy to clean, etc.

I don't know much about these things so I figured I'd ask the pro's!

Thanks everybody!

We used to use one of these on our boat:

The Thetford porta-potti was going to be my suggestion as well. They have a sealed valve that keeps odors in tank (and works pretty well).

Little bit better pricing on them can be found here: Porta-Potti

Hi,
We camped for several years in a home converted Ford van (sort of a b minus) and used a Thetford porta-potty. It worked OK----you do have to lug the loaded bottom part from the van to a dump site or toilet, and when full, it's fairly heavy. You will also need to anchor the unit in the van so it will not turn over or slide around while under way. We used a strap with a slip buckle anchored to the floor, and run through the lifting handle on the bottom section of the porta-potty. We found the odor to be minimal, and this has the advantage of leaving it at home when you aren't needing it on the road.

The simplest and easiest solution is this
http://www.cleanwaste.com/wag-bag

You can buy the refill bags in the camping department of Walmart - it will cost you for each use, but disposal is clean and simple and there is no odor once you seal the bag.

There are several companies that make a similar set up - and most camping stores should have them for sale.

If your plan is to use public restrooms when stopped this is a perfect solution to the need to go when in route. It is not bad all of the time and many use this during the winter months when their RV has been winterized to protect against freezing but still want to take a trip.

ditto on the porta potties. There are many brands and they all work the same. The odor shouldn't be a problem if you use a chemical. We have been using this product www.5starhappycamper.com for over a year and have NO complaints. We have used the blue stuff in the past (in a porta potty and our TT) and found it to be to smelly (sweet sickening smell) for us. Reminded us of the porta potties used at fairs, etc. We still have our porta potty from our pop-up in case of an emergency. Friends of ours used it once in a rental cabin at a campground. Never know when it will come in handy.

When we got our 1972 model 10 years ago, the potti was broke ant there was only one holding tank. It was designed to discharge the grey water on the ground. We solved the problem with a Theford Porta Potti as the black tank and re plumed the sinks and shower to use the one tank as a grey tank. It was hard to find, but I did find a hold down kit to keep the potti from sliding around in the shower. It is two brackets that screw into the floor and has sliders that fit in slots in the bottom of the potti.

One thing to watch as you drive in the mountains is a change in pressure in the tank, as it is not vented.

Works for us for 10 years.

First, check out this:

http://www.hondarv.com/?BleenKleen

You'll see that I mention the pee-bottle in that article. If the problem is merely that someone needs to pee, you just need a good pee-bottle and the Lady J, which can be obtained from most camping stores like this one.

I have found that any really good plastic water container (such as could be used for drinking) will work as a pee-bottle. If it's good plastic, it won't let the odor through. I occasionally squirt a bit of Lysol into it, but otherwise I merely rinse it out.

I'm a big WagBag fan too, but for just peeing it's really overkill ....

JMHO.

EJB

A nice alternative to having the toilet waste tank removed from inside the van is the cassette toilet by Thetford. This model needs to have an access door to remove the holding tank but other models can be set up so that the holding tank can be removed from the outside by opening the rear door. Had ours for years and is much more convienent than the portable type; IMHO of course.

EJB: loved that article. Very well written and informative.

As suggested by 1775 as well, I use a similar product from Wal-Mart as the Wag-Bags. I have a 5 gallon bucket and toilet seat called the Luggable Loo. I used a Thetford for many years until I got tired of the process of dumping and cleaning it. The Luggable Loo and Wal-Mart bags are fabulous! Another friend and I call the whole set up the "Lovable Loo". Since I use my Loo a lot, I find it invaluable.

BTW, I even put one in my Honda Element using a 2.5 gallon bucket "just in case". Just a little emergency preparedness for whatever takes away our comforts.
