Those who have been there, what is your opinion of one or the other or both?
For the musical, where would you recommend seating?

We loved both, but have not been back in over 20 years!

The musical is great and there isn't a bad seat in the house. They have made some improvments to the theatre this year. You'll be fine no matter where you sit.
Same with the campgrounds. Assuming you'll be in an RV not tent. Sagebrush is the closest to the theater and the shortest drive (about 5 miles) from the gatehouse. Sagebrush tends to attract a more mature camper and is the nicest from a layout perspective IMO.
Hackberry is the place to be if you want to see wildlife and is usually has the most campers because of that.
Mesquite is 8 miles down in the canyon and you have to cross 6 water crossings to get there. The crossings aren't bad and Mesquite has the best views from your campsite.
You can't go wrong with any of these choices. Palo Duro is great.

We have a 38 foot 5th wheel and stayed in the campground the furtherest into the canyon. We saw wild turkey and road runners every day. The musical is great and so was the steak dinner. Beautiful place.

Palo Duro is a "DO NOT MISS" if you have a chance. We bicycled the roads and hiked the trails and watched nature and relaxd. We did not have the park dinner but we really enjoyed the play. We did not make reservations for the play and were very lucky to get seats that were not called for. There is not a lot to look at between McKinney and Canyon but go anyway.

I recommend the Hackberry section, but don't get a site too close to the creek/river. Those Texas mosquitoes are tough, and some are big enough to saddle!

Thanks for all the great input. I see that Hackberry only has 30 amp electric. How hot will it likely be in the canyon in around June 17/18? Will one AC be enough to stay comfortable?
alicatg - We travel McKinney to Colorado every summer so I am (unfortunately) well aware of the scenery, or lack there of. But have never been to Palo Duro, so was thinking of making a stopover this year.

Mesquite is my favorite section...50 amps, GREAT scenery, lots of wildlife.

As mentoned, there's not a bad seat in the theater and the play is great. Right in the middle is great.

If you like to hike, you gotta do the hike to the Lighthouse!!

Don't miss the Panhandle Museum in Canyon. We took the kids to the water park in Amarillo one day and I highly recommend that to ease the Texas temps.

Enjoy!!
