Go during the Winter time and you don't have to worry about RV crowds. Of course the local animals are there to keep you company.
The sites are fairly small and basic but we still prefer to stay in the park than outside of it.

I would not call the sites small. I had a 40' coach towing a car, and I think I could hae parked a similar rig behind me

MPond,

Staying INSIDE the park has advantages. While I was there we went to town several times and more than once I couldn't believe the line to get back in the park. It just backs up sometimes. So, no matter which site you're in, being able to stay in the park and go to my trailer to have lunch, a snack, a nap , well that's just the best!

Has anyone stayed in the "Camper Village" in Tusayan? It's a private RV Park just outside of the GC South Rim in the town if Tusayan. What's it like?

I was looking at all 3 possibilities:
  • Trailer Village
  • Mather Campground
  • Camper Village (Tusayan)

During the weekend that I'm looking at in June, Trailer Village is fully booked. And I read somewhere that Mather is limited to 30' max length.

I've been to other State Parks before the would let you exceed the length limit as long as you fit in your space. I'm in a 38' DP - has anyone else stayed at Mather in a rig over 30'?

Yes, I was in a 32 footer at the time. Mather campground.
I was assigned a curved pull through spot. I scraped bushes in my one particular spot. I had no slides also.
A 38 footer. I dont think so.. Thats pushing the limits little too far.
BUT BUT I bet there is a spot somewhere in there that you could get into. But the problem is. They assign you the spot when you check in.
You tell them you have a 30 footer and waltz in there with 38 feet, whatcha gonna do when you dont fit.

Thanks everyone for the replies as well as the pictures, love them!!! I would prefer Mather but I also read they are real strict as to the 30' max lenght rule, my sister was there a few summers back and I believe they got the tape measure out because they didn't believe her when she told them she was only 28'. Even though my rig only comes in at 33' I will be staying at Trailer Village, looks very nice. Thanks again.

We stayed at Ten X which is a National Forest Park just outside of Tusayan and it was wonderful. This was total dry camping but the sites were roomy and the scenery was beautiful. The price was unbelievable too.

Are you talking about Desert View Campground?
Grand Canyon South Rim Campgrounds

This one is listed as 26 miles East of Grand Canyon Village, so I'm assuming that's the one you're referring to. Unfortunately it's also limited to 30 feet.

Do you think we'd have better luck finding a larger space there?

MPond.....We stayed at Camper Village two years ago. It's really a big open field with full hook-up sites. There were alot of Cruise America type rentals going in and out each day.

We were in the same boat and couldn't get into Trailer Village. When we first pulled into Camper Village we were a little disappointed, but as a home base for the park, it was fine.

We were there diuring the summer and there was a line each day to get into the park as another poster stated, but there is a free shuttle from the park that stops on the street in front of Camper Village. It just doesn't run as frequently as the shuttle inside the park.

There is also a great ice cream parlor in front of the park.

We stayed at Camper Village last fall because it was all we could get. Nothing to write home about, as someone else said it is just a big field. All you get is a gravel site with hookups, which is all we needed anyway. Our site had the sewer dump line broken and I had to improvise to get the hose to fit. I think it could use a little TLC.

Can't remember the name of it but there is also a pizza place that was very good but a bit pricey, at least when compared to what our local prices are. The ice cream place was closed. The IMAX was worth the cost of admission.
