I saw four people doing what you contemplate in my 33 year CHP career. All four got greetings from the judge for a little meet and greet session. Extremely dangerous and in my opinion warrants zero tolerence.
Give the kids a portable tv or game boy.
The ticket is very expensive if you need more incentive. I know, "but officer, I wasn't watching"!
My response, "press hard; there's four copies".

On mine I simply unplugged the tv from the dedicated outlet that is in the above rear of the cabinet and plugged it into a spare outlet that is inside one of the overhead cabinets adjacent to the tv. On mine the spare outlet is in the cabinet above the driver's seat where the dvd player sits.
Also on mine however, the spare plug is not wired directly to the inverter like the dedicated tv outlet is, so I have to run the genny to have the tv on while driving.
As others have stated, it may be illegal in many states/provinces to have the tv on in view of the driver while in motion. In my case I cannot watch the tv while driving, it's too far up and over but I can hear it.

- First of all, disconnect your rig from shore power, make sure that the generator is off and that your 12 volt battery supply is off as well.
- Next, examine the area where your TV is plugged into. You may need to unscrew the receptacle. You are looking for a 12 volt relay that should be either right behind the receptacle or very close to it.
- Once you've located the relay, simply cut or disconnect the 12 volt wire going into it.
- Make sure to tape up the end of the 12 volt wire you disconnected or put a wire nut on it to prevent any shorting in the future.
- Reassemble everything, turn on the power and test everything.
What is a relay? it is a 12 volt switch that sits between your 120 power source and the outlet. When the ignition is on, the relay powers off the switch so that no power can pass through to the TV.
On my rig, the relay was a bit more sophisticated. The TV is not at the front of the cockpit, but on the side with a swing out arm. The relay would not allow operation when the TV was pointing towards the driver, but would allow it when the TV was swung towards the back of the rig and out of view from the driver. Unfortunately, it had to be 100% rear facing and not 98%. In my case, it is impossible for the driver to see the TV once it is past 45 degrees and the optimum viewing angle for the kids was about 80 degrees.
If you truly can not see the TV while it is in operation then there is absolutely nothing any police officer can charge you with. The law is that the TV must not be visible to the driver while under way. So if it isn't watchable by you, you are clear.

I don't understand some of you people, You go on how everybody
should have a brake system in your toad car and yet
you tell someone to to run the tv when driving.

A little off topic, but not far enough to start a new one - it's OK to look at a GPS nav screen, but not OK to look at a TV. I cabled the display of my laptop running Microsoft Streets and Trips to my front TV. Am I looking at a TV or looking at my nav screen?

I will not have any tv running while I am driving because I know I will be listening to the tv and paying a lot less attension to my driving. Yes I do have a 19 in laptop on the dash with the GPS running but I look at it for directions and back to the road. I feel that is less distractiong than DW saying you should have turned a block back. On the road my job is to drive
