Have been in West Yellowstone for the last two weeks. I will be leaving here Sunday 5/15 and have some time to kill before arriving in East Glacier on 5/19. That gives me a few days to explore. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to explore and stay as we travel north.
Oh, if anyone wants some snow I know where to get some.....

One option would be to go to Butte and spend a day or two there. The World Museum of Mining is very interesting and they offer an underground tour. It looks like they are open for the season. There is a KOA that is right next to the visitors center. There are also trolley tours and the Copper King Mansion. From Butte you can take I15 to US287 to Browning and then to East Glacier.
One of the difficulties is that many things are not open until Memorial day and we have had a huge winter so many of the natural areas are not accessible yet.

For what it's worth, there is a lot of good camping along Montana highway 83 and it's a very scenic route into West Glacier area. Lots of wildlife also if you're into those type of things. Not to be confused though, I'm talking about "campgrounds" not RV parks though there are a few of those also but I haven't stayed at any of them.

In Great Falls, MT: C.M. Russell Museum -Really neat if you like Western Art - HIstory.
If you use US 89 in Montana to get to Glacier, they have a city park with camping at Choteau which is about 105 miles from the east entrance at St Mary's and 140 miles to West Glarier. We stayed at it, I believe, in '97, but do not remember a creek. We stayed in a city park, in the town, not sure if it is the same town. Looks about right on the map. There is overnighting at a rest area, closer to Glacier as well, near Dupuyer.

Lewis and Clark State Park and Caverns are worth seeing if open at this time of the year.(near Whitehall off I90)
We also enjoyed the area around the Flathead Lake area, Kalispell, Whitefish, etc.(Spruce Park on the River is a nice Rv park in Kalispell)
Helena is interesting as it is the state capital and has a lot of old and historic buildings. Butte as already suggested is also worthwhile.

I just drove 83 today.....there really aren't any 'passes' so elevation isn't the problem, but boondocking MAY be, as a lot of the FS roads appeared to be still snow covered or muddy. That may limit your options. There are a couple of state park cg's with paved roads that are just opening for the season, (near Seeley Lake.) Scenery is fantastic, but not many 'touristy' attractions & activities are open/available this early in the season.

Try visiting Virginia City and Nevada City, Montana on the way from West Yellowstone to Glacier. We stayed two nights there last July on the way from E. Glacier to W. Yellowstone. They are restored old timey mining towns, Virginia City is touristy and Nevada City is a recreation of what the mining town looked like in the gold rush days. The two towns are right next to each other. It was one of the highlights of our trip. There is a campground about 3/4 mile outside of Virginia City, but I forget it's name. Good Luck
