Last year we got a Heartland Road warrior 385rw. Since we started camping about 3 years ago I wanted a toy hauler with a full size garage mainly if I wanted to take stuff Other then just a golf cart. It was great at first but the truck won't tow it well, I think i got too big of a trailer for the truck. I have a 3500 dodge diesel. I have been thinking about trading it (the camper) off for another one but the dealers want to give me one third less then they are listing a 4 or 5 year old unit for. I know they gotta make a living but give me a break. Even looking at the other used ones they don't come off the price of them. from my shoes it looks like they'll make 15 or 20 grand on mine when they sell it and make 15 off the one I'd buy. We have a mortgage on ours so I don't really know the process for sellin it outright. What would you guys do?

What do you mean by 'won't tow it well'?

Wow.....really tough spot.

That is a big trailer. Too big for your 3500 SRW.

First year depreciation (actually as soon as it is registered depreciation) is huge on any rig. Private sell would be best in regards to recouping monies and being able to pay off balance.....not a chance with trade in at dealer.
Private sells w/outstanding balances can usually be handled easily between seller/buyer/bank.

You Ram is an 03....paid for? Trade in for bigger truck (DRW) with higher payload....??

1) sell/trade your TH at a loss.

2) trade or sell your old truck and buy a new more capable truck.

3) look at converting your truck to a dually depending on how you are going to load the TH. -But at max TH weight (18K) you will need more truck.

Not trying to be a buzzkill, but how did you end up like this?

In this economy and as much as that thing costs, most people would make sure all their ducks were in a row??? Sorry, I am not trying to be mean, just curious.

Trade the truck in on a new one. Get a new dually and you will be fine. I tow a lot of weight with mine. We had a toy hauler before the Suite and even loaded the toy hauler was lighter than the Suite we have now. You will find that any of the new 3500's/350's will handle your RV. The money you save by not trading in your current RV will pay for the new truck and you will have the new car smell again with an exhaust brake that helps when slowing down the larger RV's. PM me if you have any questions.

HOw I got like this, I went to the camper show. I almost think it was an impulse buy that took 3 Months to get. AS far as a new truck, no. I thought about it but the big camper has become more of a hassle then it is worth to us. The payments arent what I call bad but they are not $100 a month either.I think i will try to sell it out right but I have one more dealer I want to call first. Then we'll either trade it or get out for a while.

OH, by "won't tow well", It is too heavy for the truck. Not bad around the shore but went to deep creek lake a few weeks ago. Second gear to the floor 43 mph.

Hello Hammer21661,

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? If the filter is fouled the truck runs like a dog with a heavy load but is still good around town.

I had this same problem last summer.

I found the larger trailers a hassle too. In SoCal or areas with desert/open land it's probably not so bad.

Another option is to buy a large used F550 or such, which can can be had at reasonable cost. My neighbor bought an early 2000 flatbed type for $4K and it runs great. It would give you a backup vehicle as well.

Whatever you do, Good Luck. and don't let a new buyer take an over-advantage of your situation. Somewhere a buyer would love to have a new rig like that for a discout that is equitable for you.

If a new TV is out of the question than no matter if you trade it in or sell privately you're looking at a loss. Unfortunately, many fall into this situation for whatever reason and end up taking the hit in order to get the unit they want. Good luck, hope whatever method you choose get's you into the rig of your choice without loosing too much money.
