I need to cut about 1/2" off of the plastic piece that slides back and forth to allow the screen door to remained closed. any suggestions on how to cut the plastic without melting the edge?

It depends upon the type of plastic. I've had fairly good luck using jig saw with fine tooth blade. Might help to place masking tape on both sides of where you're making the cut. You can use a pocket knife to cut off the melted plastic that sticks. Light sanding will work to smooth it.

Depends on the plastic and depends of the JIG SAW. I cit a piece once with a standard Jig Saw and as soon as I made the cut the plastic would re-weld itself behind the cut . When I was done I had a line of welded plastic and the piece was as solid as I started.

I needed to get a new jig saw that had adjustable motion, so it didn't just cut up and down but made a sweep motion, as well as speed adjustment. Too fast will melt plastic and re-weld like in my situation.

That was an expensive lesson for me.

I use an old serrated edge steak knife to cut plastic, works pretty good for me.

knife or saw bade, manually cut by hand

motorized friction is your enemy when cutting plastic
