OK! LOL. WOW! Sounds very similar to our experience we just had on Saturday looking at an in stock Cameo.
We have been emailing La Mesa Orlando for several weeks about a 2011 Cameo 31ksls. They origianlly offered us $12k for our current rig. A few weeks later they came up to $14k. While we there on Saturday, they offered us $16k. We left and went home to think about the Cameo overall as we were actually pretty happy about the $16k offer for our unit. The price of the Cameo was OK, too.
We decided we'd go for it so I emailed them and said lets do it. They came back to me and said that corporate had evaluated some of the deals that were on the table (meanwhile we had signed nothing nor did they even have our phone number) and they could not give us any more than $10k for our rig. Rediculous! I have bought many a vehicle in my days and never have seen such crap. I hate it for them, as they lost a sale to LazyDays. Picking up the new Cameo on Saturday.
I'd beware of those guys at La Mesa. What a wast of time. Pretty shady. phillip

Trade-ins of: Cars, Trucks, RVs.

Take the one you now own (the "trade-in") out of the equation.

Sell it yourself.

Cash is king.
(If you have your own financing, it's the same as cash).

If you can't sell your present RV (or car/truck) at a price as good or better than what they will give you on a trade - the dealer is going to have a tough job selling it also (and he probably realizes that).

Very frequently - more often than most realize - RV dealers "sell" the trades they take in at auction.

~

Cars & trucks.
Plan to *order* the vehicle.
Never, never deal with a salesperson.
Never, never simply walk in to a dealership and expect to negotiate successfully.

Know the dealer invoice & dealer holdback for the vehicle you want,
price it with the options you want - no changes (that's as close as you will get to the real dealer "Cost").

Shop prices via internet. Call dealerships and set up an appointment with the fleet salesperson. If they won't tell you who that is, just move on.

*If* you must have a vehicle "in stock" - still talk to the fleet salesperson. Won't be as good as ordering, but you may come close.
Because you did your homework, you *will* know approx what the dealer paid the factory for the vehicle!

Happy negotiating.

We had a similar experience with General RV in Orange Park, FL. It felt like we were at a used car dealer. They kept saying they were not “high pressure” while hovering over us. We had told them we were just looking. We were asked what type unit we had. Then the sales manager tried the old “I have someone who just called and wants a unit like yours”! Yeah right. I told them the dog and I was bored and wanted to leave.
We did get a couple of calls from a sales trainee who was present apologizing about the way we were treated.

Our friends tried your suggestion of not trading in their fifth wheel when they bought a new one. Now, 11 months later, they still can't sell their old fifth wheel. Now they're asking a little less than the dealer offered them for their trade in. Sometimes you really do get a deal. My story is a little different. I did trade in my Designer last September when I bought my DRV Select Suites. They gave me $30,000 for my 5 year old Designer. They still haven't sold it. I know this because I called the dealer & told them that a couple who go to the same RV park in Florida as us told me he wished he knew I was getting rid of my Designer. I asked the Dealer if the Designer was still on his lot. He said yes, because used fifth wheel prices have fallen so much. He has the Designer listed for $29,000. I'm not arguing your point, just stating that sometimes it's best to trade in. You have to evaluate each deal on its own merits.

I had called LaMesa in Orlando when I was shopping for a new Cameo. Right off the bat I did not feel comfortable with their sale approach. I told them to give me their lowest price. Their price was 10% off the trailer and a very low price for my trade in. I walked.

Thanks all; this thread is a short course in negotiation.

Most all of us are at least thinking about newer or bigger or better.

And wondering if it is worth the hassle.

I would of called the salesman that you were dealing with back and told him you had found a deal that was just about as sweet as they had offered you.I wouldn't offer him any information on who, where or a dollar amount and tell him to have a nice day and hang up.
