I am just bringing the RV back to life and after flushing out the water system, put the drain plug back into the HW heater.
The plug is plastic and I used some teflon plumbers tape around the threads. The plug is weeping a bit but I seem to recall that is should only be hand tightened. I could certainly use a wrench to tighten it more but want to hear from the group if that is ok.

I use a socket wrench on mine as it weeps if only hand tightened. I've never had a problem removing but I do carry a spare in case it should break. I use teflon tape also. Good luck and happy camping!

It's ok to wench tighten the drain plug (with a little reason applied) but you should REPLACE the nylon plug each season to prevent it breaking off and causing difficulty down the road. They only cost about two bucks so I used to carry a couple of extra when I had an Atwood heater. Best protection against threads getting bunged up or rusted is to make sure you NEVER leave the drain open. After emptying put the plug back in.

All pipe threads taper regardless of the material used to make the pipe.
I have much better luck with Rector Seal than I do with teflon and I've never heard that the drain plug should be only hand tight.
Put a wrench on it.

I use tape on mine and then hand tighten, if it leaks use a wrench on it, but only tighten a quarter turn and check for leaks. If it still leaks give it another quarter turn and check again.

On my Atwood Water Heater Plug:
Hand Tighten (To avoid misalignment)
Use 15/16 Socket (6 Point) and tighten it down some

Hi,
I only hand tighten mine. It does not weep. When I go to drain I usually have to use a wrench to get it open.
