I will be traveling from Sante Fe, NM to the Grand Canyon and want to stop in on Sedona, AZ on the way. I would like to
try and find a point of interest and a place to stay for a couple of nights to break up the ride. Maybe something near the NM/AZ border.
Never been to this part of the country, so any tips and advice would be much appreciated. Also any recommendations at the Grand Canyon would also
be appreciated. Thanks. Chris

Sedona is a lovely town/area. Be sure to take a look at Cathedral Rock (state park?). Also, drive up the hill to the local airport for an amazing view of the area.

Sedona,AZ is 50 to 75 miles out of your way and you will have to back track to Flagstaff and Williams to enter the Grand Canyon. If me I would go North out of Santa Fe and stay at Chama,NM and maybe ride the narrow gauge train. Then head over to Farmington,NM, past Shiprock and on Kayenta, NM on the Navajo reservation ( drop off point for a ton of John Ford movies) to spend the night. From here you can take a day trip into Monument Valley. Now head over Cameron Trading Post tp spend the night and visit the historic trading post. The next day head into the Grand Canyon via AZ 64 to its western entrance. We have done it and it is great trip through a part on the US that few folks take the time to see. Roads are paved all the way.

For touring Sedona, we always stay at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. It's an easy drive and fine for big rigs. Enjoy your trip!

re seeing Sedona, you should stay in/near Flagstaff and drive your car down to Sedona and then on over to Jerome, an old gold town on the side of a mountain.
But not a good route for MH or trailers.
Grand Canyon can be very busy, so try to make reservations NOW. The only campground with hookups is Trailer Village. And you should stay up at the canyon if possible because it's 60+ miles north of I-40.

I wouldn't recommend taking a 40' motor home down AZ89A out of Flagstaff off I-17. It's doable but not recommended. There are a couple areas that are very dangerous with the switchbacks. If the Sedona area is a must, you could take the toad, there's a campground at the Fort Tuthill County Fairgrounds. Intersection of I-17 and 89a. Personally, I think Sedona is overrated although the area is beautiful, but there is much more to see in the Cottonwood area, and Dead Horse Park is a wonderful place to stay.
Off I-40, we stayed in Holbrook Az KOA and the grandkids loved it!...from there you can visit the TeePee Motel of CARS fame, Petrified Forest, Painted Desert and Meteor Crater. On your way into Flagstaff, you can stand on the corner of Winslow AZ of Eagles fame.......Dennis

I second Dennis' suggestion of staying in Holbrook. Cool old Rt 66 town with lots of rock shops and statues of Dinosaurs. There is a motel there where you can "stay in a tepee" for the night. Holbrook is close to the Petrified Forest and painted desert NParks. Not far also from Meteor Crater. In the Grand Canyon area Williams has a number of very nice RV parks. You can take the steam train there to the G Canyon. Also a fairly close drive to Sedona. Sedona has a nice RV park just as you enter it. Cannot remember the name. Sedona is well worth driving to it. Several very good places to eat. The red rocks are the attraction here plus the "vortex". There is a BEAUTIFUL park just north of town for easy hikes. One of the prettiest hiking trails I have ever seen. Do take the "Vortex" jeep tour. Fun. The red rock Church is a short drive from town.
I would also recommend visiting some of the Indian ruins in the area, there are several up by the Grand Canyon and some down hwy 17 toward Phoenix. Do NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! take the windy 89A from Flagstaff to Sedona in a big RV. I did it in a car and it was hard.
