Just for added info about the superglides. You can't, I repeat can't high hitch with them. No matter how hard I tried it just wouldn't happen. I didn't do it on purpose. The jaws will not close unless the king pin is in the right spot.

I too have the 16K Superglide, I installed it myself on Dodge Quad Cab, keep it clean and lubricated with SlipPlate per instructions and I can't imaging not having it. I love it....and I, like the rest, can't imagine how it could cause damage to the tailgate, had to be user issue in my opinion.

I have the 5th Airborne with Sidewinder. Does two things. 1. Smoother ride. 2. Puts king pin 22 in back and I can do far beyond 90 if needed.
Best of all. No special hitch required and no messy grease or maintenance.
Less expensive if you already have a hitch.
Had ours for 4 years. Not a single issue.

Good "gee whiz" stuff . . . but -
Have you had both a 5th Airborne w/ Sidewinder -AND- a SuperGlide?
I'm perfectly happy with the SG (5 years, not a single issue either) - but never had *your* favorite, so no way to compare.
Be interesting to hear from anyone who had a SG and went to something else.
BTW - the "special hitch" *is* the SG, and *NO* messy grease required!.

We have a manually operated Reese 16K and it works fine. Not really a big deal to get out and pull the lever but I guess it could be if you've got traffic behind and have to make a sharp turn. Also, have a friend with the auto and he says it's great too but I think they cost quite a bit more so my inclination would be to save the money.

Interesting retort.
We had a reese manual slider, didnt like getting in and out of the truck. We shopped around and we didn't want a superglide, they take up far too much bed space and you need help removing them to use the bed. For us the 5TH AB was a better choice. Takes me 2 min or less to remove my hitch and I don't have to call the DW or a neighbor to help me.
The 5th AB/SW kills 2 birds with one stone. Better ride, and no need for a slider and massive hitch in the bed. If you don't want the smoother ride option, you can simply get the SW alone.

I have been following this thread with great interest & appreciate all the input. Thanks to OP for posting it because it helped me make the decision on which type of hitch to install on my SB truck. I decided to go with the manual slider because I believe like many of you that it will not be required on many occasions but there may come a time when I need it.

I'm not real familiar with the Superglide. Does it slide back when crowning a steep hill.
The greatest benefit i have received from my manual slide was increased clearance between the top back corners of my bed and the bottom of the overhang when breaking over the crown on my very steep driveway.
Just curious.

When you start to make a turn in your TV the Super Glide hitch starts to slide back on its rails to move your 5vr back away from your truck cab. The sharper the turn the further the hitch moves back. It keeps it away from the cab so your 5vr does not hit your truck. It does the same thing when you back up-it slides back. They are heavy duty hitches. I am glad I bought mine as I never worry about hitting my cab since I have a short bed. It would just be my luck to get into a tight turn on the road and I would make the turn and I would smack the cab and be very upset that this has happen to me-sitting in the road with a broken glass everywhere and my 5vr damaged thinking why did I buy this cheaper hitch. I always do say each to his own.

I thought about a auto sliding hitch but being a old guy from the era when we pulled 5th wheel trailers before sliding hitch were on the market I prefere a manual slider. I only use mine on my short bed Dodge because the hitch can be slid back in maneuver position which keeps the pin behind the trucks rear axle at all times for quicker steering input. No issues with my current '97 Reese 16k manual slider.
My neighbor pulls with a long bed 2500 chevy 8.1/A and uses a manual sliding hitch for the same reason. He set his pin up in tow position zero over his trucks rear axle so he could get the full benifit of the sliders rearward length.
Many short bed GM owners report not needing a slider or using their manual sliders at any time. Many claim 2"-4" of clerance. With the newer 5er front cornors why waste money on a heavy high priced auto sliding type of hitch if its never needed.
