We are planning on taking a two to three month trip next winter but are having problems finding out what to do about the mail. Post office will only hold it for 30 days, no one to handle it for us. What do others do?
Also what do you do to keep up with the occasional paper products that get dropped in the driveway while you are away or about having the house checked. We live in a rural area, no close neighbors, no relatives or friends close by. Are there companies that offer this as a service or what?

Good Sam mail forwarding is Great, $10 per month + cost of postage to mail to you we do once a week and is about $2-3 per week. We have them toss the junk mail and not many magazines
We hire a neighbor kid to pick the stuff at our door.

We travel about 1/2 year, with several different moves during the 6 months. We use a local UPS store for mail while we are gone. We rent a UPS box, then do a temporary forward with USPS to the UPS box. UPS store will sort and send mail where and when we want it - all we have to do is call them or contact via email. Works great for us and we do not have to depend on a neighbor or relative.

We ask a neighbor to check the house occasionally. When PO leaves a crate of mail after 30 days, neighbor puts it in our garage, along with any other stuff lying around, and puts a new 30 day hold mail slip in mailbox.
Close neighbors is relative, ours lives over a mile away, but once in a car, who cares?
BUT, all important bills are set for auto bill pay with bank first. That way only junk mail is held by PO.

X-2 on UPS mail box and forward service. We have our house keeper stop by our Michigan house once a week to check up(she lives near by). A neighbor picks up the unwanted papers in our drive as he gets his own mail.Here in Florida there are companys that will check your house for you,we will look in to that.

If you are going to travel during the three months, get a mail-forwarding service. Then you can call them and tell them where to send it. The Post Office will forward your mail to a 'temporary change of address' for up to six months. If you have a destination park, just have them forward it to that address. That's what we always did.

As has already been stated, if you're going to one spot for the whole winter, the post office will just forward it to that address.
If, however, you're going to be moving around, what we did was have a neighbor hold our mail and send it in a package to "General Delivery" at a post office in a town we knew we were going to be staying in for a few days. We picked up our mail every week or so, but each time from a different post office.

Make sure it's a small town with only one zip code and one post office. Otherwise it could end up in a central routing office.

When we started travelling we switched ALL of our mail to a UPS Store box. Anytime we're away from the stick n brick we e-mail them with a delivery address and method (mail, UPS ground, next day, etc). Generally we have the mail sent to a local UPS store so that we don't have to rely on the local park/resort handling it.
