I have a need to double tow behind my 5th wheel from Florida to Michigan. What I would like to know is any State laws that would stop me from making this pull. I wouldn’t be over length or weight and I know how to pull. Just interested in the legal slant on this. I know if it is legal that you guys will let me know.
Thanks
Ron

No on double towing, most of the east coast states, including Florida, prohibit double towing by non-commercial vehicles.

Have two TVs or make two trips, or you stand the chance of being stopped and told to remove your second tow on the spot, along with a citation and heavy fine.

Google towing laws. Florida and Georgia do not allow it however I have seen a lot of people doing it during the racing season in Florida. If you come up through the middle, Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Tenn, Ky etc they all allow it. Again check US towing laws.

Double towing is allowed in all states as of 12/31/2010 according to their regulations going directly between Florida and Michigan except in Florida if you are a Florida resident and have a Florida drivers license and/or the vehicle is registered in Florida. The laws in the state your vehicle is registered in follow you in Florida but there are some additional Florida stipulations. Florida does require you to only be driving into or out of the state on main roads while double towing. This info was given to me by a Florida State Trooper last year. I had gone to a trooper's office because we had been stopped by a Sheriff and wanted to know the written law for the state. Some of the Florida County Sheriffs have been known to give people a hassle including us but they don't ticket you if on a main road going to or from the northern Florida State Line. Even a hassle isn't any fun and the Sheriff even admitted he didn't know the particulars of his state's laws regarding double towing but he said stopping us gave him the chance to check us and the rig out to see if there were any other violations! I really don't feel that's fair as he had no reason to have stopped us. He didn't find anything improper but had us stopped for nearly 40 minutes. It sucked!

There are 3 double tows of motorcycles right here in the CG we are in presently not far from Gainsville with out of Florida vehicle licenses as they are here for biker week. All 3 are pickup/5th wheel/motorcycle trailer. One last week had a bass boat on a trailer behind their 5th wheel and were from Ohio.

This will not help the OP as it sounds like he's a Florida resident and therefore can't double tow in his own state of Florida.

I find it very interesting that a Florida Trooper didn't know the law and gave you information that could lead to a large fine. Here is a copy of the current law and notice the date......

I would like to see something official about being able to double tow in every state effective 12/31/2010. I don't believe it.

My son lives about 20 west of Daytona. During our visits we on occassion are visiting during bike week at Daytona. I've seen doubles and tripples of all types on I-10/I-5/I-75 and I-95. I also have seen Florida troopers on the side of the road east of the Pensacola area on I-10 east bound lane more than once with their overheads on behind a combo tow.

My son is a FL resident (23 years) and tows a 5th wheel and would love to be able to legally double tow his blue water boat behind the 5er.

I always check with the states I'm traveling through for any legal issues as everyone has a opinion on any legal subject.

Indiana it's leagal at a max length of 65 ft. Any trailer over 3,000 lbs requires brakes.
