It's for sure That the gas vs. diesel argument can go on and on, each one has their merits. The one thing that bugs me is that by now with all the technology you would think that both could do better on the mpg.
Read the section on efficiency in this wikipedia link. No matter what you do, this is the limiting factor
Both gas and diesel trucks today could do better on the mpg, especially the diesels. The problem is the manufacturers keep using the technology to increase the power output instead of leaving the power the same and increasing the mpg.

Diesels also have the disadvantage of all the latest mpg robbing emissions equipment. Lowering the emissions per gallon but using more gallons isn't acomplishing anything in the end except costing more money to operate the truck, using up more oil and costing more to buy the truck with all the extra equipment.

Your last paragraph was insightful from an environmental standpoint. However, it is accomplishing ONE thing: higher sales/profits at the oil companies because of the lower MPG. You got to remember that it is big business who writes the laws in this country.

This is a question I have been asking for years, but the idiot politicians cannot provide an answer.

This is what happens when guys knowing NOTHING about cars make rules for them.

I'm all for a better environment, but lowering a bit of NoX and putting out huge amounts of CO2 (from bad mpg) is not good. It damages the Earth much more, in the long run, than a bit of soot.

I wonder how many hard working pickups it takes to generate the soot of one luxry cruise liner, idling for hours on end, running bunker fuel.
