As in Dragnet..1st the facts.. Been boondocked for 3 months. Battery are being charged only up to 13.5 as per the inverter. Using honda 2000 generator and rig conveter intel power 9100 model pd 9160 with Charge Wizard.
Problem is the battery are not being recharged up to spec. considering the time Iam on the Gen. Acording with the manuf. Spec of the rigs convertor it would take over 11hrs to charge battery to 90% even using the Wizard.
Question is could/should I buy a Black and Decker Smart Battery Charger Vec1093dbd. 40/20/10/4, or some type like it, run it inconjuction with the Honda Gen. for a higher and quicker charge?
What are your thoughts or sugestions?

Using the smart battery charger by Black and Decker, given the various settings from 40/20/10 what setting should be used for rapid recharge. Would 40 blow the system? Thanks

Good answers so far.

1. Yes. The 1093DBD is known to be able to operate concurrently. Once it awhile you might need to fool it. Probably best to kill the breaker to the PD first... start the 1093, wait a couple a' minutes and then kick the breaker back on and force a boost on the PD. This will give you 100A and will be maxing out your genny. You won't be able to use the A/C or anything else of any 120V consequence while you do this.

2. That HF charger IS great! Though you want the 10A version. The one quoted here is the 6A. But the 1093 is better suited to accomplish your stated goal.

3. Forcing a boost of your PD like smkettner mentioned just might make a world of difference.

***EDIT***
I wouldn't be shocked to find that your wiring between the converter and batteries inadequate. This will definitely slow things down... mainly by fooling the PD to drop out of boost too early. Forcing the boost should help, but you can't beat adequate wiring. The minimum is 2% voltage drop, but I would shoot for no more than 1%. If your rig came stock with the PD... unless it's right near your battery bank... you probably have more like 5% drop or worse.

Otherwise, the PD should be adequate for a typical RV with a pair of batteries.

1. What type and how many batteries do you have?

2. What gauge wire runs between converter and batteries and how long one way?

Hi - when using the auxiliary (Harbor Freight or whatever) 12v charger, are folks using the 55A setting to quickly throw some juice back into the batteries, or just the "usual" 10A charge rate? Thanks. ST

Your wiring would good for 100 amps at that length and size. Hit the boost button on your charge wizard like others have stated.

With decent wiring, yor pd should be capable of going from 50-90% in 3- 4 hours.

Did u really mean 9 inches???

No point. Should only be done for like a min. or 2 at a time before shutting down. 2 min would give you 110 amp minutes which is ~ 3.7A at a steady pace.

***EDIT***
Upon further review, I suppose each minute at 55A would give you about 5.5 minutes worth at 10A. So 2 minutes could conceivably save you 10 minutes or so worth of charging at 10A.

Of course, according the built in gauge, the HF charger is more like a 15A charger when batteries are thirsty. I haven't confirmed this with an Amp meter, but based on what I've gathered from mexbungalows, I think the built-in gauge may be reasonably accurate.

Still... you're supposed to shut the unit down for 5 minutes or so after running the 55A session. So it's still pretty pointless to try and charge this way. Unless you want to risk burning up your charger.

BTW... be careful with the 4-position switch on these things. They're pretty cheesy. Mine came apart last night while I was upgrading the 12V wire to 10 AWG (16 is just too dang small.)

Luckily I'm 1/4-way tech savvy. I popped the top and fixed it. The back came off and then 2 springs plus their 2 metal contacts pop out. Just put 'em back in, close the back of the switch and then baby the switch going forward. It probably happened while I had the charger sitting on its face. Inserting that 10 gauge through the back with the grommet was no easy task! Stoked that I did it, though.

I plan to use mine almost exclusively in the 10A mode, so I'll just try and leave that switch alone whenever possible.
