Hi all,
Not sure where to ask this, but will give it a shot here. Wife and I want to take a trip to Alaska and back in 2013, but are considering inviting a few like-minded folks to travel and share the adventure with. We are not a business of any sort nor are we "it's gotta be our way" type of folks. A caravan company might fit us, but googling reveals that caravans are too fast-paced and structured. We would prefer a looser, more intimate caravan of 2 to 6 rigs...ish.
Is this too odd to ask? Is this the correct place to ask?
Any of you guys want to join us? I've got a tentative route including most of the popular spots spoken about often and am adding more as I go. Here is a list of our thoughts and some insight into who we are in case someone wants to go with us.
1. Socialize over food and conversation both at local hot-spots and at the rigs with pot-lucks or BBQs.
2. We drink a little socially and are not smokers.
3. We enjoy museums, historical sites, and other typical attractions.
4. We don't want to move daily.
5. We like leisurely walks vs. strenuous/hiking.
6. We do like side tours that can give us detailed info such as a unique city tour or short boat excursion/cruises.
7. Although my wife doesn't like "off-path" adventures such as fishing a stream or kayaking, I do. One I've got to do is Salmon fishing.
8. We are prepared to spend up to $10K or so.
I figure that I could get this started now and if there are any takers, we could get to know each other some prior to 2013. Let us know.

We will be headed back in early summer 2013. But, we'll be permanently moving to AK, so our caravan will be a bit "different". While we will be traveling slow, we probably won't be allowing much time for sightseeing... But maybe we'll run into you on the way!

We both retire late summer, next year. We are right at your age, one older and one younger. If you can make it, great. I hope things work out for you both regardless.

We would consider it if the timing is right. We were there in 2005 and 2009 and have another trip planned for 2013 with our cousin. We are planning on 3 plus months in Alaska with about a month each way across Canada for a 5 to 6 month trip. We stop a lot and don't like to travel more than 200 miles a day. Don't like to be on the road before 10 and off by 4. If you think this would work for you send me a PM and we will keep in touch.

Readers, I've googled quite a bit and am putting together a list of possibles for our trip. Any and all comments are welcome of course, but I'm looking for things to see and areas you consider "do not miss...". Also, how long would you stay in one particular location and why. Don't have to comment on all of it. Just whatever you want. From my green perspective, this seems like a lot to see and I don't want to overdo it, but at the same time, I don't want our first trip to be sitting 4 or 6 weeks at one particular spot. We may do that on return trips. For now, we're leaning towards a leisurely, self-paced, whole experience, type of trip. We really expect 4 plus months. The order can be reversed. If you suggest that, please let us know why. I'd like to hit some salmon fishing at peak time. Here's the tentative list:
1. Lethbridge, AB
2. Calgary, BC
3. Lake Louise, BC
4. Jasper, AB
5. Dawson Creek, BC
6. Fort Nelson, BC
7. Liard Hot Springs, BC
8. Watson Lake, BC
9. Teslin, YT
10. Whitehorse, YT
11. Dawson City, YT
13. Chicken, AK
14. Tok, AK
15. Valdez, Alaska
16. Palmer, AK
17. Sterling, AK
18. Homer, AK
18. Kenai, AK
19. Seward, AK
20. Anchorage, AK
21. Denali National Park, AK
22. Fairbanks, AK
23. Tok, AK
24. Kluane Lake, Destruction Bay, YT
25. Haines, AK
26. Skagway, AK
27. Teslin, YT
28. Watson Lake, YT
28. Dease Lake, BC
29. Iskut, BC
30. Stewart/Hyder, BC
31. Hazelton, BC
31. Fort Telkwa, BC
32. Prince George, BC
33. Cache Creek, BC
34. Hope, BC
Thanks, Brent.

IMO, I'd hit Valdez on the way OUT. The fall colors on the way to Valdez, especially thru Thompson Pass are stunning. Also, silvers will be running, awesome fishing from the shore, and great bear viewing ops.

One detail to keep in mind is that the larger the group traveling together, the more you encounter, the need for reservations at campgrounds. And someone has to be in charge of handling this chore. Plus, once you start making reservations, far enough out, to get 4 or 6 sites, you are tying yourselves down to where and when you have to be somewhere. Puts you on a more fixed schedule.
We traveled our last trip to Alaska, in 2009, with my wife's sister and her husband, in our two rigs. Even having the one extra rig made a difference, since we were a truck camper and they were a pull behind pop up. We had a great time but it does change the dynamics of the trip. Lots of stuff to be decided ahead of time, travel together or meet in the evenings. I.e. if one rig doesn't show up at the selected campground, who if anyone is going to go back and look for them? Lots of good social reasons to travel with others, but some liabilities as well.
Have fun as it is a great trip, a trip of a lifetime, one you can do as often as you desire.
Some places, campgrounds, pull outs, etc we could camp next to each other and some place not. Here is one together, at the Liard River Hot Springs PP.
