We have a 2004 Allegro 32' 2 slide 8.1 Class A motorhome with 20k miles on it all maintained and up to speed. Next year my wife and I are going full time and going to be on the road for awhile. Thinking about upgrading to a diesel or just keeping what I have. I can use some extra options to it and it would be nice but not sure what to do. I would like to get into a 38' or better 4 slide diesel but not sure what I need. I do not want to over buy but looking long term these days. What is a good move here.

The floor plan is the most important. If the layout does not work for the two of you, nothing else matters. Diesel vrs gasoline? You must consider how many miles you plan on putting on the coach. I think the national average is somewhere around 6000/year which makes the diesel less advantageous from a maintenance cost issue, especially if you must pay for service.
If what you have is working, I'm not sure that I see the logic to upgrading. I think I would try it and see how it works for full time use. If it does not meet your full time needs, make a list of what you would change, and then go shopping.

My advice is to do the first year in your current MH. After a year you will have a good idea of what length and floor plan will fit your needs.

We did 1.5 years full-timing in a 32 foot no slide motor home. We would have moved up to 38' DP with slides if we had continued. But the DW wanted to near the grand kids (5 of them). So now we still have the same motor home and are 5 miles from the grand kids.

For full timing you will probably need at least 3000 pounds of CCC.
I would make that a priority.

People do get by with less CCC but people also full time in class Bs and slide in campers and that wouldn't work for most of us.

Note that although diesel pushers in general have higher CCCs than gassers they don't always. I have seen DPs with CCCs as low as 380 pounds, so you have to check.

One thing you will run into is if you need bank financing they are VERY reluctant to loan money on any kind of recreational vehicle right now.

We just bought the coach in my sig. It had been on the lot all summer and had five buyers that wanted it bad. Banks would not qualify any of them. We didn't need financing and bought it for 1/3 off their asking price (Less than $80,000).

The manager said it is getting so bad for financing the banks are to the point they only want to loan money to folks that don't need to borrow.

If you don't need to borrow you can make some great buys.

We sold our gasser and went to a Diesel just before we retired. We live in the Diesel (2 slides) 3 months a year in San Diego. Well worth the extra expense, size regardless if it sits most of summer in Colorado.

I knew there was something strangely loveable about him. Good thing you guys have your Navy M.D.'s.

Oh you should go with a DP with slides. We just came out of a 32' Journey. We loved it but there is no comparison.
