Question for you all. I am going to be changing the tranny filter and fluid in my 2004 F150 soon and have always used Ford specified fluids.
What do you guys use and why.
Thanks

Always had mine "flushed" and filled with OEM Motorcraft fluid (every 30,000 miles as specified). transmission is like new at 135,000 and 90,000 towing.

The manufacturers use different friction modifiers on their oil formula. Therefore you must use an oil that is approved by the company that made your tranny. This is very important. Otherwise it really does not make any difference if you change it per the mfg recommendation.

For towing if Ford approves it synthetic is the way to go. Much better dealing with the higher temperatures towing can cause. Allison recommends synthetic in all their transmissions.

I flush mine every 30,000 with Napa ATF+4. The dodge website provided a list of approved brands.

I let the Ford dealer do it per the maintenance schedule.
Don't know if it applies to yours or not, but just had my wife's '08 Expedition tranny flushed. Service guy hooked it to a flushing (?) machine and then seemed to be doing nothing but watching. He finally came over to me and said that the tranny had a thermostat in it and it had to wait for it to come up to temperature before it would open up and the flush would begin. And that was after I had driven it several miles to get there.

Ford has many different tranny fluid types and using the right one is critical. Check the owners manual and use what they recommend

Mine was the same way. Had to run the engine to warm the fluid before it would open.. But didn't take long after it started. Got all the old out, and put in the new in one application.

I did a Ford OEM flush at the dealership with Mercon V, as specified last time. I am thinking of trying a drop and drain with Schaeffer full synthetic next time. Supposed to exceed Mercon V specs and I already have the fluid.
