Go to an auto supply store and either buy new straps or a battery holddown kit.

My single battery is mounted on the tr. tongue in front of the prop. tanks.Held down with a galv.chain and padlock.
Drilled a hole in each side of the metal battery tray. Fastened the long end of the chain to one side and reaching half way down the other side over the top of the batt. box. Installed a short chain on the other side. The 2 ends almost meet. The padlock secures the whole lot. To take the last bit of slack out of the chain I slid a piece of hose over the chain and over the top of the battery box.
Works great. No rot and no theft.

yeah a hold-down kit would work. Be very careful with a metal holddown kit for the batts and using a metal wrench while reassembling the jumpers/cables

Otherwise a well made, polyester tiedown strap is the best synthetic still for tieing down in a caustic environment such as a battery box/compartment.

I just get a suitable length bungie cord, wrap it around the battery box and top, and hook the ends together. Every now and then I replace the bungie cord (they're cheap).

Hi,

Find some 100% wool straps. It is more or less impervious to the strength of acid in a lead acid battery.

I use a nylon tie down strap cut to length. After you cut it off burn the cut end to keep it from unraveling. The 1" wide ratchet type or the ones with the press type lock release work well.

Heck I have trouble getting the strap off my box...any tips on it? It seems like it real tight (which is good), but the teeth on the buckle are dug in pretty good to it..
