Another "maybe" if you have access to a shopvac with a 3" hose. Drain the tank and put the shopvac hose on the "Blow" opening of the shopvac and stick the hose into the drain connection where the slinky goes and see if you can blow the can back to where you can get ahold of it. Tap on the piping while you are blowing.

I am not sure what the OP means by "it went past the first turn". My toilet sets directly above my black tank, connected by about a 6 inch section of vertical black pipe. If I dropped that can into my toilet, it would go directly into my black tank and sit there, unless the trailer was on an incline and caused it to roll in the tank. First I would take a flashlight, open the gates to hell, and take a look into the tank, if possible, if I couldn't find someone else to look for me. LOL A magnet attached to a flexible rod of some type might just attach to the can and bring it up. Without seeing how the OP's toilet is plumbed into the tank, it is hard to offer anything other than guesses.

Magnets are fine but won't do a thing to an aluminum can. The flexible tool for reaching things is one choice. If it won't hook it, and flushing won't bring it out, use the flexible tool or a stick to get the can in sight from the stool opening and, as long as you have no open wounds or cuts on your hand or arm, reach right in there, pick it up, throw it away, and wash your arm. Now, that wasn't so bad, was it?

Vern you have a small arm… imagine how embarrassing it would be to call 911 and say you need help getting you arm out of the crapper…

I do believe the best way is to dump the tank, and if it don’t come out on its own a shop-vac would be worth a try… the shop-vac should hold the can enough to retrieve it, if it is locater where you can get to it…

Someone suggested one of these cameras before… might be a handy tool to have…

my son knocked the toilet paper roll holder into the toilet (Don't ask how, still not sure). When we emptied the tank (use a clear fitting so you can see) it went right down.

I second the clear fitting so you can see what's coming out. You might have to fill and dump several times but better than the arm in the tank. If your dump valve and slinky hook up are in a straight line it should be fairly easy. Mine has a 90 degree bend in it so not as easy.

Wal-Mart and CW sells a plastic sleeve with wings on it for holding the valve open. About $3-4.

I'm with the magnet crowd. With the bend in my black tank discharge pipe I don't believe anything 10" long could make the turn.
Magnet on a string or flexible tubing would be my 1st attempt at resolving this.
If the can is aluminum a magnet will not work. Magnets will only stick to steel.

This suggestion will be of little or no help for this present situation but could be helpful in the future to all who read it.

Anytime you are working in an area where tools, cans or what have you can fall and be tough to retrieve, just tie it off to something with a good piece of string or rope. Sometimes tying it off to ones wrist saves a lot of time and heart burn.

In the present situation everything I could come up with has probably been suggested. Good Luck.
