We have a 2002 HR Admiral. Thinking about changing out the two chasis batteries, but have a concern. What will be the effect on the electrical components when I disconnect the batteries for replacement? Any help would be appreciated.

They won't work while the batteries are disconnected. Otherwise no effect.

They will be off just like turning a switch off and if you connect the new batteries correctly everything will come back with a few squawks from propane and co detectors.

Hi folks,

The OP says chassis batteries. If he disconnects all power the computers memories may "wipe". I think it would be prudent to avoid that if possible.

I would change one at a time and keep the system *hot*.

IF you want to insure no loss of radio, clock, computer, et-al memory then you need to make it a 2 person job

First person sits in the driver's seat

When you are ready, USE INSULATED TOOLS and have an insulating wrap handy

Have partner press and hold the AUX Start or Emergency Start switch

Quickly disconnect batteries (Wrapping positive lead with insulating wrap) and get the new ones in there

Easier way

Jumper across the isolator solenoid.. You need not use a heavy wire, but if you do use a light weight jumper add a fuse. say 5 or 10 amp

Two standard electronic jumper wires (Radio shack) and a 5 or 10 amp blade fuse.. One side of the solenoid to one blade on fuse, other to other wrap fuse with insulating tape.

Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

I just changed all of my batteries (3 coach and 2 chassis). No problems at all in our Freightliner chassis. I might also note that we have a battery disconnect on both sets, so the batteries are disconnected regularly without issue.

I have changed my batteries twice with no effect. No switching anything off, just changed the batteries and everything worked fine.

The 02 Admiral was on a ford or workhorse chassis. Do you really have 2 chassis batteries, or do you mean the 2 6v house batteries?? In either case, you should have battery disconnects. Turn off the one you are working on and go for it. Good idea to take a good clear picture of the wiring before you start. Good Luck

You could always do like the service centers(Sears, etc) do, 9 volt battery connected to a lighter plug. The 9 volts is enough to keep the computer and radio memory active.
