RV blew a tire on a U S Highway (U S 17) between Charleston and McClellanville, SC on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Or son had borrowed our rig for the first time. We were not with them. Contacted our Good Sam Emergency Road Service and were told we were not covered because our son was driving the tow vehicle and he was over 25! We thought we had coverage that focused on the vehicles, not the driver, but we decided to just pay for the service to be done. Our son had hurt his back and doing it by himself would have been too painful (we thought).
DH was on the phone for almost an hour as they tried to locate someone to provide the service. Fortuntely our 2 young grandsons (22 months old and 2 weeks old) slept through the whole thing! After 45 minutes, our son, who had been trying to do it himself anyway, called and said he was successful. They went on their way.
Meanwhile, DH had told Good Sam that the problem might be solved - but he didn't want to cancel until he knew that, in fact, our son had been successful. The Good Sam operator promised to keep trying to locate a provider. DH told him to call back (cell phone battery was weakening) if he found someone so he could talk to them directly - the Good Sam operator was very, very confused as to our son's location and we knew we could tell a local service person where they were.
Our son called about 20 minutes later and said he had been able to change the tire, so DH called Good Sam and told them the problem was indeed taken care of. He never spoke to the same person each time he called, even though he tried to do so.
About 1 1/2 hour later, a tow truck operator called and asked where we were stranded. DH told the man he had told Good Sam to call if he was found so he could speak to him. He told him the problem had been solved and that he had called to cancel the request for help.
The tow truck operator, understandably, was very annoyed and said 'someone will have to pay for this bill'. DH said "not me" and repeated the senario he had had with Good Sam.
Apparently, Good Sam never cancelled the call. They certainly never gave the service provider our number, as specifically requested.
We no longer want to deal with Good Sam. Are there other options available that will provide service regardless of who is driving, or the age of the driver? We want the rig to be serviced, not the driver!
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Two young retirees restless to GO!
Life is too short to wait too long to do all we want to do!!
Go and enjoy!!

Many people on this forum have Coach Net and swear by it. I have but but so far I haven't needed it and hope that holds true. I had AAA but switched when I got an expensive tow bill even though it was within my 100 limit. I found out they only play the first $300 on a tow and the first hour on a service call, anything over that you pay. I couldn't find those limits posted anywhere.

This is one place Good Sam falls short, i switched to Coachnet after being with Good Sam for years but i do know Coachnet has the same age limit clause even if it is your primary vehicle.I think Good Sam switched providers, i had some of the same issues you had. 3708

Read, Read, Read your policies before you assume something. ERS all have restrictions and most cover only you, the spouse, and dependent children under 25 in school and live under your roof. Good Sam was under no contract with you when a grow family member is driving your vehicle and has a problem. You'll find this is the case with all ERS including Coach-net that so many on here think is the greatest until they have a problem with service then complain how they were left holding to bag.

Our real problem was not that our son wasn't covered. We weren't aware of that but it is not an unusual thing so no beef with that. That one was our bad. What bothered us was the failures in communication. We won't pay for a service we did not need and cancelled! That's our beef with this situation.
Is there any ERS out there that covers the vehicles regardless of the driver? Just asking.
Will look into Coach Net. MI Director - any preferences or experiences with this sort of thing?

I purchased the Good Sam Platinum service to cover our vehicle and our daughter in college. We have used the service 3 times, once for a flat tire and twice because our daughter locked her keys inside the car. We received a letter from Good Sam this week stating that there have been numerous calls on our account which could impact our status as member with them. Kind of made me PO'd, didn't know we were not allowed to use the service we paid up front for. Wondering if anyone else has had this experience with GS ???

I have to say that I too am disappointed in Good Sams service. I told my friend and co-worker about GSERS and he decided he also wanted it for his trip to Sturgis in August. He bought the service for his trailer, which is a equipment trailer that he transports his bikes in, but it also has windows and a door. Just short of Sturgis his Ram PU broke down. He managed to get into a service station. When the tow truck driver arrived, he said that he would only tow the truck, and not the trailer, as it did not -qualify- as a RV. Fortunately the service station had plenty of area to leave the trailer, so my friend got the PU towed to a Ford Dealer, where he left the PU to be fixed, rented a PU, drove back and got the trailer and went on to Sturgis.
I use to work on a computer help desk, so I can tell the difference between someone that wants to help, and someone just out to do the minimum. This meets the later.

I received a similar letter from AAA, I found out they would do 5 service calls a year.
