Quote: The only "issue" with both has been a recall to replace the cam position sensor (CPS) which is a minor 10 minute fix. There is also a recall for the cruise control harness.

The 7.3PSD required supplemental coolant additive (SCA) in the antifreeze. If the SCA level was not properly maintained, there is the possibility that the cyclinder walls may have pin holes due to cavitation. Ask the owner about the SCA maintenance. If you get the "deer in the headlights look", I would pass myself. YMMV

You can get SCA test strips at NAPA, or the Ford dealer, or your local fleet maintenance place.
In my experience, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. 9800 for that truck is too low. There must be a reason.

Ball joints and transmission/torque converter are the more common issues. If the build date is prior to mid-Dec of 98 it is considered an early 99, there were numerous factory upgrades to the 99 1/2 models and many aftermarket parts are only available for the 99 1/2 through 03 7.3 PSD.
That is a great price, good enough that you may want to find a diesel "expert" to help with your decision.

That isn't entirely true. There are actually very few differences. The most notable difference is the front hubs/brakes. The engine changed slightly. The air box and air cleaner changed. Just about everything else is the same.
The changeover didn't occur exactly on one day for everything. The early models had a "Powerstroke V8" badge on the front quarterpanel by the headlight. The later ones had Powerstroke badge on the door. Mine has the early '99 parts yet the badge is on the door.

You can't look were the PSD logo is to depict what version it is. It's a good indication but even you pointed out yours is not right.
More than likely by 160K miles most of the known failure items have been replaced. A lot of people have greasable ball joints installed but if there are no zerts on the ball joints they could have been replaced at some point. If no zerts plan on replacing again at some point. Mine have failed between 130-165K miles. Same is true of the hubs although the F250 must have been made on a Wed afternoon as the driver side went to 260K miles and the passenger side is original at 285K miles. The others have been replaced around the time the ball joints failed.
The factory hubs if 4x4 are known for failure. All mine have been swapped out the plastic Warns. The dually was bought used with the metal premium Warns but they failed do switched to plastic version. The F250 had Warns, and greasable ball joints installed 135K miles ago and both are still working well.
The tranny being recently replaced is good. The F250 had a failure at 83K and 250K miles. The Excursion is still original at 220K miles as is the dually at 185K miles.
$9,800 seems like a really nice price.

Bought the same with 200,000 miles. had spoken to my mechanic, the Ford Diesel mechanic where I get my car serviced. the both say the 7.3 of that year is the "Golden Engine" that can easily reach a million miles with care.
I have heard many problems about the trans, but so far(knock wood) My trans hasn't been rebuilt yet. The previous owner towed a boat. I towed my 26' TT this summer and it pulled it like it wasn't there.
I like it.

I had that done on both of my trucks, but that recall isn't specific to the 7.3. He was asking about 7.3 engine related issues.
One other problem that some have had is the injector wiring harness rubbing through the insulation under the rocker covers necessitating a replacement of the wiring harness.

I had to have service on the valve cover harness twice on the F250. Once on the top at 185K miles and the second more as preventative maintance at 275K miles under the valve cover. It was a few hundred the first time and about $400 the second time. Again due to hard starts my mechanic replaced them but the issue was found to be related to the PCM, the truck is on it's third. They are $700ish from Ford but the used market has them for $150-300.
Here's the deal with the 7.3. Navistar ran forged internals through 2000 MY. Some very early 01's got them but then they also had the mechanical diode issue in the tranny. All Powerstrokes built after the forged rods had powdered metal rods. For building up hp and tq and longevity the forged rods are the only way to go. Ask any motor builder what's better and you'll get a quick response.
One more thing, ditch the stock in dash cup holders for 03 versions. Brown for some reason costs 3 times more than gray. For that reason the two tan interior trucks have gray.

WOW, alot of good advice, I am pretty good at motors, But I've only worked on chevy's, I know to look for the obvious, Did my research on the tranny's, but didn't think about the ball joints, Thanks.... Never heard of the addidtives to the coolent, I'll have to check on that, I figure I could put 500K miles on this if I do alittle TLC, I will be using this for towing a 30ft TT that is about 8,000lbs, Should be no issue, I'm in Florida and it's pretty flat around here, But if needed, I could take it to the mountains, Thanks for all the Advice, I knew I could count on this web site, That's why I love it so much... Thanks
Camping year around in FL is fun
