Hey Pat, so was that on one propane tank or two?

I have a small room heater that we bought for my sons room when he was a baby. It has a sensor at the bottom that shuts it off if it's knocked on it's side. Also has the isolation feature along ith a digital thermometer. Is that the kind you guys speak of?

I have a question relative to this subject. I just purchased a 1997 Jayco 1207KB PUP in excellent condition and was told my furnace and refrigerator were both electric. Does this mean I am not able to draw off the propane tanks? In an early post, someone mentioned a 3-way refrigerator. How do I know if I have a 3-way furnace/refrig?

Also, it didn't come with a 12V battery, but the previous owner said it was wired for it and showed me the area in front of the propane tanks where it is stored. What kind of 12V battery do I need to hookup if I wanted to use my appliances with DC? Sorry for all the questions, this is my first experience with a PUP.

Thanks, James

Hi Kcskitek,

Welcome to the wonderful world of RV's.

The fridge and the furnace both require 12 volt power to work. That can come from "shore power" or from a battery.

If there is room for only a single battery you will want the biggest meanest deep cycle monster that will fit. You may even wish to add a second one.

To make household appliances "work" without shore power would require an inverter, or a generator.

I'd suggest, when asking a question, that you start your own thread--and try to mention the make and model of any item you want information about, such as the fridge.

Sorry Tuna unlike large RV fridges our small ( less than 5 CF) do not require 12 volts to operate. They have no real thermostat and operate on a amount of cooling, not tetmperature.
However they are 3 way and can operate on 12 volt. Mainly used for traveling and it supplies apx 1/2 the BTUs of either 120 volt or propane.

Hi James,

Non inverter generators are dependent on rotational speed for frequency. They use a bunch more fuel to do that unfortunately.

I hadn't heard that before. As I'm looking at generators that good info, thanks.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the correction!

I wish the bigger ones were the same! The thermostats are poor stuff in them, imho.

I would be afraid to have any room heater in the trailer that shows a flame especially if you have kids with you. Use the oil filled radiater type electric heaters that puts off great heat and has no oder, no noise, or no visible flame. Perfectly safe to use... They are not that expensive either ($35 @ Lowes or Walmart)

I actually found a low profile version of this heater and I have one in each corner of the bed area in our popup. If you place a fan behind them they move the heated air all around the popup. My theory is use the site AC power since you have already paid for it instead of using your propane to run the furnace.

If a generator is burning a gallon of fuel an hour, you've got one heck of a large generator. My 2000W Honeywell runs 6 hours on one gallon of fuel, and that's at 9500' elevation (and it's just as quiet as a Yamaha or Honda).

Boy I missed that one a long way haha... My Honda 2000W runs several hours on a gal of gas.

My point was running everything off the generator 24/7 probably not a good idea. Most sites wont allow it anyway... I just run mine a few hours each day to charge up my batteries. Everything runs off the battery except the couple of items I need AC for which runs off an inverter. Of course I cant run the air conditioner off a 2000W generator.

Thank You for the advice. What kind of Deep Cell should I purchase? I did some research and found them anywhere btwn $75-$300. The Optima's are very expensive and Walmart was the cheapest, but only 500 cranking amps. Once I connect the two posts up to the prewires from the tow hitch, does the battery charge off my TV power since I am connected to the 4-pin? I will try and post this on a new post next time.

Hi,

Choose the voltage that will allow the greatest number of amp-hours to be crammed into the available space without exceeding the weight allowance. I prefer 2 volt, 12 volt and six volt in that order. For my further thoughts about batteries surf here:

and click on “Battery Selection”.
