I have done a bit of searching on the forum concerning taking American currency to Canada. I think you can exchange your currency at a Royal Bank (or at other places) for Canadian currency. But what is the story on using American bank cards in Canada? I deal with Bank of America. Would their bank cards and/or Visa cards be valid for expenditures up there?

I may be in Canada and/or Alaska this next summer.

Thanks for your comments. - Larry

Canada is very modern country with all the amenities you are used to in the States. You should call your credit card provider regarding fees and usage in another country. Be especially aware that many will charge you a 3% fee for foreign purchases and will suspend the card if they are not notified you will be using it in another country.

You should not have difficulty with cards as long as they are backed by Visa or Cirrus. Would be a good idea to purchase some Canadian currency at the bank to maximize exchange rate advantage. ATM's will work but you will get clobbered by transaction fees.

Roy M, I'm glad to hear that about credit/bank cards. I really hate to carry large amounts of money when on trips.

Visa and Mastercard, no problem anywhere we've been.

Some few places take American Express, nobody takes Discover.

If you want a fair exchange rate change your money at the currency exchange when you cross the border or at a bank. Don't expect anything better then par. We Canadians have taken a beating in US businesses when we have used Canadian money in the US so don't expect any bonus in a Canadian business. Also you should have no problem with your credit card but they will charge you a service fee on top of the exchange rate.

Hi,
If you use credit cards, you need to check with your bank to see if they have transaction fees. In some cases it can be costly to use your card outside the US.

I just returned from a 5 week trip in Canada, and used my Visa credit card almost exclusively. Every place takes Visa. I found I always got the best exchange rate on Visa, and the service charges were negligible. I was initially concerned that some places wouldn't take Visa, so I got some Canadian $, and now I'm stuck with about $75 Canadian that I can't exchange. I would definitely recommend going with your Visa Card for the majority of your purchases.

We travel to Canada every year so don't mind having some left over. We use Bank of America and for every transaction made with the card there will be another transaction posted for a 3% international transaction fee.

However, BOA has an agreement with ScotiaBank and you can get cash at the current exchange rate without any transaction fee or ATM withdrawal fee.
