I need to make reservations for a site at Rainbow Springs and have no idea what the sites are like. Since reserbations are by site, I would appreciate recommendations. I would like a shady site and one large enough for a novice to back into.

They recently renovated the park. Because of that there is almost no sites that have shade, very litte grass, they took down most of the trees putting in the services to all the sites and the sites are pretty close together. I think all sites now have water, power and sewer connections.
I had reservations there but changed them to Silver Springs SP. Big sites, nice laundry and showers. They do not have sewer connections. When we went to Rainbow Springs we took a look at the CG. Glad we changed.

They are all pretty good, but we made a list of the ones we like best which are 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19 and 21.

These are all on the outside olf the loop.

I am not sure why another poster left.
We have stayed at many of the Florida State parks, and I think they did a superb job on this one, with full hookups to boot.

We have been to both Silver River and Rainbow Springs, and like them both, but I would put Rainbow Springs a notch above Silver River in rating them.

IMO sites 12--14,16,18,19,21 and 50(large PT) are the best and offer some shade. Sites are good sized. As for the comparison between Rainbow Springs and Silver River they are two completely different type of parks. Silver River is a great nature park with a small museum with W&E only(pics in my photo link) and Rainbow is a park that offers swimming in the Rainbow river and a great tube float trip and has FHU. Rainbow is also a very busy park and reservations are recommended. PM me for more info if needed.
