The last few weeks, it becomes apparent that there is a really disturbing trend for the moronic drivers amongst us! It's bad enough to see a car or less often RV trundling down the freeways and highways with a line up of other vehicles behind them. As you move to another lane, you see that they are talking on their cell phone. We've all seen this and been rightfully annoyed!
But the newest thing sweeping the freeways of SoCal is living proof that the recessive "Stupid Gene" is emerging on more people every day!
And that is the new trend towards cell phones with built in Navigation applications. The screens are tiny, and these miscreants are holding them closely to their myopic eyes, staring intently at their upcoming destination. And generally ignoring the fact that they are straying and weaving from their lanes!
And God help me a guy towing a Mallard TT with a Chevy Avalanche on the I5 freeway south yesterday was doing it! His speed had gone from the Maximum California 55 towing speed down to 45! A big Yellow Freight Line Tractor/trailer almost rear ended him.
What next? Watching their favorite streaming TV show or movie on their cell phone while driving...wanna bet?

But it's really nothing new. 30 years ago I was going down West Broad street in Columbus OH wondering what exactly the person in front of me was doing... Got up beside her and she was doing needlepoint while driving....

A few years ago while driving to work on I-95 North we saw a man in his PJ's eating a bowl of cereal and reading the newspaper that was tucked into the steering wheel. I thought that was the all time stupid.
Tis another fine day to serve in and for the glory of the Corps. Every day is a holiday and every meal a feast.

Just a little off topic, but a recent first for me was seeing a teenage boy going along on a bicycle, sometimes in the bicycle lane and sometimes straying out of it and into the travel lane, steering with his forearms and his hands occupied with something (texting) on a cellphone. I'm afraid to ask: what next?

"Distracted drivers".......the only thing new is the 'high tech' distraction.
Fumbling with tape deck (4 track/8 track/cassette)
Eating/drinking
Make-up/shaving
Map reading (newspapers/books/magazines)
Yaking with passenger and hand gestures that go along with it.
The list goes on & on.....now it's just all the gadgets that are available.

Men shaving, women putting eye make-up on, reading books and/or maps, all while driving…
Nothing new just added some different media to the mix and do it more often on highways with more traffic and some using multiple distractions at the same time…
Just the other day on a 2 lane winding road with no passing zones a guy in front of me traveled between 40 and 65 MPH up and down, crossed the centre line to many times to count and dropped off the berm twice while texting and talking on the phone… no less than 2 oncoming cars moved to the brem to avoid being hit by him as well…
I have seen drunk drivers do better than this guy…
His vehicle had a 800 how’s my driving on it, and I did report it…

I passed one of those going slow in the fast lane while talking on the phone people the other day. She topped what I've seen so far, she had a jacket draped over the steering wheel with her arms it in it backwards and had it held up to her face. At first I thought she was protecting herself from the sun then noticed she was talking on a phone and was trying to hide the fact that she was since it's against the law here in CA. I don't under stand why she didn't just invest the $30 in a Bluetooth.
