We boondock most of the time. We have only been to campgrounds, this year, on our recent trip to the FL keys. We use our MH 12 months out of the year. Many times in the winter months traveling to our daughters track meets. We use the generator and house batteries quite a bit and really enjoy our rig. We have a property in CT and travel to it many times a year. It is a rental so after we check it out and let the clients in we use our property to boondock on and boat for fishing. The best part is it is free!

First off, I am a considerate camper. That's is why I parked at least 50 yards from the only other camper there. I would love to not have to use my generator but in Texas in August it won't happen... We normally stay in parks that have atleast elec. and water so it isn't a problem. I would never run my generator in a park or near other campers. I agree that the sounds and sights of the night in the middle of nowhere are wonderfull on only would run generator when needed. I don't think I will be making many trips to Cooler Climates that many of you enjoy... The only bad thing is that Texas doesn't have a lot of public land to allow for us to do a lot of Boondocking.. Maybe this winter when it is cooler so we won't need a generator we will head into the few National Forest in our area.

Thanks for all the replies and Happy Camping.

I live in Wyoming and in 35 years of camping, I have never been to a campground with hookups. Wouldn't know how to act. And as someone above stated, you will never regret getting a Honda Ei2000.

That's funny you were scared to boondock .. I'm scared of RV parks. Why do you turn the hot water heater off? My fridge and water heater use less than one tank a week.
The Honda 2000s are good (I have one as well as the onboard gen) but I'd opt for a Honda 3000 if you plan on running a/c. A couple of my friends had racks made for their rear bumper of the RV and haul their Honda 3000 and ice chest that way. Pretty slick set up. You can even get a remote start if you want.
Happy boondocking!

Several years ago my Onan 4.0 kw generator bought the farm. Fixing cost 80% of a new one. Thought I would try going full solar--I already had one panel--and do w/o generator. Never did replace the gen. Love solar. Biggest changes: converting from an electric coffee pot to a French press, re-learned how to cook on the stove (microwave became storage compartment), and switched to stove top espresso machine.

They put those fresh water, grey/black water tanks and battery packs in the rigs for a reason. We use ours for what they were intended... There is nothing like a star filled sky at night without the light polution of the city and the noise of the highway.

I understand your concern or amusement. I don't believe in running my OHV stuff around the campground stirring up noise and dust. We ride on trails away from the camping area. I am also one of the few toyhaulers who don't like outside stereo speakers so everyone can hear my music. I don't even like the sound of my own built-in Onan generator which I run very sparingly to keep the batteries charged and my next RV will have solar (and my next generator will be the much quieter Honda).

I like quiet nights free of noise and light pollution as much as the next boondocker here! If I have to listen to a generator for extended periods of time / at night, I might as well pack up and go back to the city. Actually we have packed up and moved farther down the road because someone brought a contractor generator and ran it all day and half the night.

Now I do consider places like NASCAR race events or tailgate parties or ATV hot spots like Glamis or Dumont Dunes to be an exception. Noise comes with the territory. That would be like going into a bar and complain that people are drinking.

Gadget Guy and Mootpoint, I didn't think that my batteries would run my AC, Please help me understand what I need to do to use my AC on batteries. If I can do this I will sell my generator tomorrow.
As stated in my original post, I just needed the Gen. for AC, I not in BC or Calgary and an AC is needed here in Texas as stated before twice..

I read the previous posts and can't see where you get the idea of running your air conditioner on battery power. It's not possible with the battery bank and inverter that you could buy. I didn't see where you stated what watts your Champion would generate but it may be too small for A/C.. In my opinion, if I think I need air conditioning, I won't be camping anyway. I go for the outdoor camping, not sitting in a trailer trying to survive the heat.... IMO
