Hi all, taking off next week for Waterton from NW Illinois. We did Yellowstone in June and it wetted our appetite for more. Since we don't need to be anywhere, at any particular time - we want to see more of Canada.
The top rig in sig has been replaced with a FL 60 puller and a 40' Teton - more creature comforts than the horse trailer. Planning to take US20 across to I35 and up to US2, across the high line to ?
What to do in Waterton?
Then up to Edmonton (gotta take her to the mall), down to Emerald Lake-Banff-Ft. Steele and from there?

Waterton just is amazing. If you get a chance to drive up the Kananaskis before it is closed for winter about Sept 18/19, it too is a spectacular drive.
We were there last September on that weekend and it was the final weekend in the campground. On Sunday morning we ran into light snow dusting up at near 8000 feet above sea level.

If you don't mind going a little out of your way, when you leave Edmonton take a small detour to the Tyrrell Museum of Plaentology. Likely the best dinosaur museum in the world. Very good. Also, not too far from Fort McLeod is an interpretive center called Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump. I think it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For some REAL great scenery make sure you add the Canadian Glacier National park to the schedule. Mountains there are even more s pectacular than in the US Glacier National Park but not as accessable. Good luck / Skip

Take the boat ride from Waterton down to Goat Haunt. If you go early enough in the day, you can do day hikes and then return on the last boat of the day.
Walk toward the overnight camping area on the other side of the river. The swinging bridge is something to see and even more fun to walk across.
You can also hike along Waterton Lake down to Goat Haunt and then ride the boat back.
Check fire danger and check bear alerts/sightings before you go hiking. I've seen bear scat on the dock and the rangers might not let you take food on your hike. You can lock it up on the A-frame ranger station at the Goat Haunt dock.
High tea at the Prince of Wales is a little pricey but it's a highlight in my memory book. Even if you don't dine there, make sure you take a look inside. The view of Waterton Lake out the huge windows is something to see.

I'm a Canadian and never heard of this one. A search proved futile - where is this?? Or do you mean something else - Waterton? Banff? Jasper?
Just returned from a roadtrip (Drumheller, Waterton, Glacier, Yellowstone and across South Dakota) and agree with another poster that Waterton is amazing; awesome scenery and abundant wildlife. Also visited the Royal Tyrell Museum; a must-see, and you will love the spectacular views coming into Drumheller from the #1 hwy.

Thanks, looking forward to it. Love the dino museums - not so crazy about buffalo jumps - they give me the creeps

Don't miss the Going-to-the-Sun road. It runs east/west over the pass at above 6600 feet. Be prepared to stop at every chance you get for spectacular views. We were there a few years ago In early July and it was snowing at the top.

Glacier National Park, Canada is in the Rogers Pass area between Golden & Revelstoke. Off the route proposed by the OP but very scenic.

Things to see while poking around S Alberta.
You will probably come up 89 to 2 in Alberta.
Take 2 into Fort MacLeod. Nice RCMP fort there.
From there take Hwy 3 thru Pincher Creek to Hwy 22.
Take Hwy 22 north to Longview.
Stop at the Bar U Ranch just south of Longview.
Take Hwy 40 west out of Longview thru the Highwood Pass into the Kananaskiss Valley.
Hwy 40 will take you to the TCHW.
Take the TCHW to Hwy 93 (Icefield Parkway) northwest to Jasper NP and Jasper. From there take Hwy 16 east to The Mall.
When you get to the Mall be careful of the entrances, some have VERY low clearances.
All of these Hwy are easily accessible for your rig.
When you get to the TCHW, I would take it west to the next exit and then take 40 north to 1A (Bow Valley Trail). Then 1A west back to the TCHW.
