Yikes! Just checked out Borrego Springs on Goggle Maps. It set a new standard for "out of the way". Hopefully the sattelite photos are a few years old. Doesn't look like there much of anything around there for miles. As far as Yuma goes, from my limited experience (2 winters) the windiest area is out in Foothills. Nothing really to stop the wind. Some parks out there have walls around them for a reason. My first winter was at Friendly Acres, right in Yuma and it was okay (folks were friendly and active). You never really get away from the wind entirely in the desert! As for no park models, if you ever get over to the Phoenix area, check out Shiprock RV in Apache Junction - no park models allowed! Also close to the mountains and shopping (more Walmarts in metro Phoenix than you can count on both hands).

This worked for us on our 1st year in Yuma.....
made a 1 month reservation (September)at an RV park in the Yuma Foothills...used it as a base and started looking around the area for something that suited us better. In September, you have the pick of the parks...it's usually too early and hot for the snowbirds to arrive. We don't like RV parks, so we drove through the maze of streets that make up the Foothills, looked for "for rent" signs (there are hundreds of lots for rent) on the private lots...called the owners, some were local owners, some remote....secured a nice huge (by RV standards)...it was 65x130, shared with one other RV, fenced, gated, graveled, FHU lot for the rest of the winter for $325/mo.
While the may be a dust storm or two during the winter, we found the Foothills a great place to spend the winter. In the far east section of the Foothills, the streets are all paved (good for walking/bike riding), there are 2 golf courses in the immediate area, adequate shopping and lots of other snowbirds.
Someone else wrote:
"Yuma's main attraction seems to be that it cheap and has two Super Walmarts but no Costco Thats probably all you need to know about Yuma"....
I say gimme a break....did you partake in the "Senior Olympics" while you were there? Did you go to Los Algodones to get your eyeglasses...maybe dental work ? Did you golf, fish, hike, explore the desert ? How 'bout Quartzsite...did you go there ? Did you take advantage of the many activities that the Yuma community puts on for the snowbirds ? Did you take one of the regularly scheduled tours that leave out of Yuma...for places all over the South West ?
I say, come on back...you missed a few things.

We'll probably stay at "The Palms". We want to spend a few days at Algodones. AS for Borrego springs. We are glad its quiet. That's what we are looking for. At the Springs at Borrego all sites are RV sites. There are no manufactured homes, though attached to the RV park is a manufactured home park called "The Roadrunner." 45 minutes to Costco in Palm Springs and 90 minutes to
San Diego. No lack of things to do, it all depends what you are looking for.
Cheers

"I have heard that spaces with cabanas are available in the Foothills. Are these usually associated with private residents who rent them out, or are they in trailer parks?"....
ans.: These are the private lots I refer to...out in the Foothills.
Is there a place where one can hang his hat that is somewhat out in the country, but close enough to the city for fairly easy shopping, etc.
We want to hear the coyotes howl(not the drug runner variety)!
ans: There are few RV parks in "the country" (and there is country...Yuma County has over 100K acres in agricultural production), but you can hear the coyotes almost anywhere. Hidden Shores RV Park is out a ways, close to Yuma Proving Grounds, right on the east bank of the Colorado River.

We rent a lot in the Foothills Yuma area. Brick fence all around, each lot has hookups for 2 rv's. The one we have rents for $300 including everything.....water, electric, sewer, and trash pickup.
You won't find this in the RV parks in Yuma. Very nice neighbors.
Go on Craig's list....Arizona.....Yuma....vacation rentals. Search.
Good Luck

I don't think you'll be dissappointed in the Yuma Palms resort, nice place with beautiful rec hall and pool area. We stayed at Del Pueblo for 5 winters in a row and could easily get pooped trying to keep the pace set by 'Jock row' with it's over 70 crowd of golfers, volley-ballers, pickle-ballers, bicylcers, ATV'ers etc., Those folks caused us to sleep-in on more than one occasion from shear exhaustion.
Today is just the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!
