I guess he figured if that drivetrain was good enough for the GMC motorcoaches of the era, it was good enough for him!

Dang... too bad Dad didn't have one of those to leave me instead of a staid Silhouette van and a Monaco Class A. I seem to recall that he did own a Toronado or two through the years. What a lost opportunity!!

That thing is freaking sweet, I would love to own one of those. Great condition and a beautiful look. Imagine the looks you would get pulling into the campground with that glorious piece of machinery.

Whoever built that, it was a labor of love. Obviously someone who had a dream and accomplished it. It looks beautiful but I wonder how practical it is. It looks like it would not go over a marble without scraping, and I didn't see any signs of AC, generator or dump valves. That doesn't mean they aren't there of course. Squeezing through that hole between the cab and the coach would be a chore, or perhaps it is meant for the family pet. I am probably too practical for my own good, I see all the work and money a talented person put into something like that and wonder if anything will ever be received in return. This from a person who seriously wanted to do a bus conversion.

With the eye of a dreamer and the skills of a true craftsman....I wish him many happy miles! Since he put it all together, I would imagine the repairs will be done solely by him....and he will probably not have half the problems some of us have encountered. Safe travels.

According to the post at the above link on another page, this unit is for sale on ebay:

We certainly don't recommend yanking a perfectly good 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado off the road in order to convert it into a recreational vehicle, but in the case of today's eBay Find of the Day, we'll give 'em a pass. After all, it was reportedly built this way as a factory project for a retiring RV industry executive.

If you have any doubts as to the suitability of the Toronado as an RV, consider the fact that the awesome spaceship-shaped GMC motorhomes used the exact same front-wheel drive platform. In any case, this machine has only 68,000 miles, and the engine was replaced with a new short block 4,000 miles ago.

According to the owner, this RV can sleep up to four, comes with a full bathroom and shower and a kitchen with stove and fridge. There are also a spattering of roof-mounted skylights for stargazing under those beautiful rural night skies. Want it? There are still a few more days left on the auction, or you can end it right now for $15,000. Happy bidding!

More info at the...ebay link

Long explanation of everything at this link. I loved his last comment:

One word of warning: Don’t pull into a campground tired and ready for bed. Everyone who sees this RV will want to talk to you about it and take pictures. They will bang on the door. They will try to buy it. I have even had other drivers run off the road while they were staring at it. This is one sharp looking vehicle. I have considered entering it into some local classic car shows. I am sure it will win best-in-class, since it will likely be to only one in its class. Someone told me to send pictures of it to Jay Leno and he might buy it, but I haven’t.

Why don't we see more like this - surely there are plenty of front drive vehicles today that are up to the job. Even the Rialta was just the front motor/cab of a VW.

Still anxious to see the 1st American Ducato based B/B+ (low profile C class in Europe).

The whole thing just looks practical.

I guess that it has 2 spare tires because the rears are larger than the fronts.
