It keeps going off when I plug in electricity. As long as the ac is going, its ok(taking out the smell I guess). Are batteries being overcharged?? ( smells like burnt batteries). Any suggestions?? thanks

Batteries don't give off Carbon Monoxide.
Are you sure it's not your propane gas detector?

A friend once told me that they have to b e replaced every few years (5+ maybe). I don't know if this is correct or not. I did have the problem where the chemicals used by a fire resoration service would set the detector off. I just aired out th unit for a few days.

One went off in a rental of mine. The tenant called 911. The FD showed up and so did the gas company. No leaks or problems were found.
They said that small, harmless amounts of CO can build up in them over time and cause them to eventually go off, hence the need to replace them every 5 years or thereabouts.

C/O detectors do need to be replaced every 5-7 years. As far as the batteries setting off the detector that is very real. The detectors pick up carbon based gas when batteries overcharge or are bad and charging they give off a gas that sets off the alarm. I see this at work all of the time houses that have sump pumps with a 12v battery back up. You can somtimes smell the battery cooking and other times you can't you can ask any gas co. tech and I think that they will tell you the same thing.
