Thanks so I am on my way to look under Monaco Coaches. Who would have known. How did you find out that Monaco Coaches and Safari Trek were one of the same?

So armed with all the info I have gathered on this site we went looking down near Toronto for dealers. We looked at several rigs to get an idea what we should be looking for on line and look for on our trip to the USA in a couple of weeks. The interesting thing we discovered was that many of the rigs we looked at were in miles NOT klms. When we asked one salesman he openly told us that they import these rigs from the US. Why not eh? Good for the goose is good for the gander or at least this Canadian Goose!
If you had limited time to explore which State do you think you would explore for used Rig, keeping in mind that we are coming from Ontario?

Kate:

I would determine the manufacturer you want to focus on and check the mfg's website for dealer websites. You can then see what they might have in the way of trade ins. You can also use RVTrader & RV USA.com to search to your heart's content. The only thing you have to determine regarding which state is that some charge you sales tax even if it is leaving the state as they have reciprocity agreements with other states when licensing. No big deal to a US purchaser but it is to a Canadian. I believe Florida, Indiana and Michigican? have such policies but some will deliver "out of state" to avoid the problem. Yu will likely find more supply in states with a large RV base. Onced you have it narrowed down then you can determine travel plans. I think the RV market has slowed down in the US so that is to your advantage in many ways.
You might also want to check with your insurance provider to determine how long they will insure a newly purchased US vehicle before it is imported/registered back in Canada. Mine said two weeks maximum.

Thanks Bob that is what I am doing as we speak. Holy Moly there are so many rvs to go through one would almost think they would give them away! Have not found one of those yet. Good to know about the sales tax thingy. Another question to add to my list of questions to ask the sellers. The list is getting quite long now. At least the salesperson will not know they are really dealing with a dummy but with a direct line to the experts.
Thanks again.

John and Angela: I did not include you in the "cochi" category. More like the we like cheap wine category!! Here is an example of why I called Canadian dealers pigs: One local dealer imports new MH's from the USA. He takes the USA price and adds about 30% as exchange. In his adds that becomes his list price. Then he discounts it about 25% and claims you are getting a great deal. Must be new math. There are many posts from Canadians who went to their local dealer and told them they had a quote from a USA dealer but would prefer to deal in Canada. The dealers would not budge from their very high prices. Just waiting for a sucker.

Kate, it would appear you've made up your mind to buy American and import to Canada. A few questions: If you bought from a US dealer, you probably would get some sort of warranty, valid only at his dealership in America, now there's a hassle. You will have to pay the HST plus the RIV cost for your purchase. If you buy in Canada you will still pay the HST, BUT, you have the option of having an independent appraiser value your purchase for HST. He will usually value it lower than what you actually paid... less tax and no RIV charge. You mentioned a lot of units being in MPH instead of Kilometeres... simple fact many dealers up here purchase these RV's at auctions, bring them to Canada and flip them at a substantial profit. There are as many deals in Canada as in the US, personally I would check Kijiji or Auto Trader and try to find an elderly couple that because of health issues, can no longer travel, they want to sell, you want to buy. It's been my experience seniors are a lot more honest than some salesman who just wants a sale. We purchased our trailer from our friends in Ohio, we knew the trailer, we knew our friends, we really had no surprises. You are buying a M/H, that's a little different, I would consider that a major purchase. Ultimately the final decision is yours..... that's why these forums are so much fun Dave.

crackersouth: How much lower would that apparaisal be? Say 20%. So 13 % of the 20% increase would be 2.6 %. However being as you would probably save 20% on the purchase price by buying SOB one would still be further ahead with a US purchase. Most dealers do not offer any warranty on used MH's unless it is an aftermarket plan that would be valid anywhere. There are thousands of people every month importing RV's boats, ATV's and cars and trucks. They are not doing this for recreation. The savings can be huge. Dealers in every province do the same. Why not bypass the greedy Canadian dealers and save money?

Hi Moisheh. I'm just funnin with ya. I know what its like. Prices are definetly higher up here. Some of it is justifiable though as pickers have to be paid, PDI's, gas certs, all in canadian dollars of course. And of course profit is not a four letter word. Of course a gouge is a gouge and the consumer must be aware. US dealers also know they don't have to worry about any follow up warranty or good will work because they will never see the customer again. A good dealer up here will look after their customers on new or used purchases.

Lots of good info on this thread though. I have imported a trailer my self (smart car trailer) that I couldn't get here. Really an easy process if properly prepared.

and hey, whats this about cheap wine?. My tastes run to quality albeit inexpensive wine. In a word, (actually two) Padre Kino.

I have briefly scanned all the posts but I did not read the difference between self propelled vehicles and towed RVs. Motorhomes must go through the export procedures in the US before arriving at the US side of the border, where as RV trailers do not need to go through any export procedures.
