Rvers are the best!

Kate...I had seen some in the US that I really liked, and just did not even think I would go through the import process, but after spending time reading the post you started, I am going to print off everything I need to know and the MH's that I can import and be prepared if the one I want pops up again. This site is so helpful and I will now search far and wide for the one that suits us. I have found that around me here in Ontario, that others seem to be looking at the same ones I am, and puff they are gone. Good hunting.

So glad you were converted like I. We are heading out next week on a serious hunt because our depart date from Canada is Oct. 12th and heading to BC for a month and then down to Mexico for the rest of the winter. Tough Life eh?
What is it you are looking for Sally. If I come across it on my search maybe I could save you some hours on the computer.
I am looking for a used any make as long as it is 30' or under. I don't care as much about the year as I do floor plan, mileage and of course price.
I want a good bed, a good eating area, a fair size bathroom and space to move in the living room. We do not like bed couches. We like a few of the Monaco units especially the Concord (some of them) and the montclair. Keep your eyes open as I will.
Kate
We are also in Ontario but quite far north so we have to travel a fair bit to even get into the States. But it is all good.

One more question to ask.
Can you use your Canadian RV as a trade in on a USA RV. We should I guess take into the calculation the cost of HST. If we buy in Canada and use our trade in we only have to pay hst on the difference. If we buy without a trade in then we have to pay the full shot. Anyone know anything about that route? The RT we have to sell is 2003 and in really good condition but we have done a lot of klms on it. One hundred and fifty klms. of wonderful memories. We would keep it now but need the extra space for trips with little grandkids.
Any idea what the difference we should expect on a trade in against a sell out. I suppose that is the burning question for most in this position. I know we traded in a big class A or the RT only to discover the buyer of it paid $10 thousand dollars more for it than we got as trade in value. But I did not have the wisdom of RVers back then. The collective knowledge in the membership is awesome.

Yes you can use your Canadian RV as a trade, however you will still have to pay the HST on the full purchase price, no tax credit for your trade.

Apart from the Tax issue bring an RV ino Canada , you cannot just drive your trade across the border to the dealer. You MUST import the vehicle into the US and it must meet US safety standards. It is a complex and detailed "Commercial Transaction" crossing the border and must be handled by a competent customs broker. I found this out the hard way but in the end all worked out. The simple way to do it would be to have the RV dealer accepting the trade "import" your trade rather than you. The trade cannot be titled in the US without the US Customs import documentation so the dealer has a vested interest in insuring docuuments are complete. Importing a trade is not without cost, complexity and extensive documentation so you need to take that into consideration in the big picture.
Bringing a new RV into Canada is extremely simple providing you have all the RIV requirements met. Be wary of Canadian dealers who tell you otherwise.

Just another caution on recall clearance letters. In my experience, both the manufacturers and authorized dealers have cooperated in providing them.
However in the past 3 years about 15 RV manufacturers have gone out of business and their former dealers will of course no longer be carrying product.
It may no longer be possible to get letters for affected brands, like Monaco, so make sure a letter is available on these brands before buying the unit.
There are threads on this site and others, id'g the insolvent.

Clearance letters are a matter of public record so are relatively easy to obtain. However Ezlife55 certainly has a point!

robatthelake brings up an interesting point. Canadian dealers are pigs. They try to make a years wages in 3 months. Markups are crazy. Do not believe one word that the dealers tell you. Most dealers are also importing MH's and trailers but sell them at Canadian prices. We have not bought an RV in Canada for 20 plus years. Have imported 5th wheels, MH's trucks and toads. Easy process.
