Ford engineers are a lot smarter than I about engines and etc. Not so sure about other things.

Just as a side note, when at walmart, look at the 5 quart containers of oil, they bring the price per quart down quite bit.

There is no standard on Synthetic blends. It can contain 1% synthetic oil and they can still call it a blend. I won't use anything other than 100% synthetic. If I want a blend I can blend it myself by pouring some synthetic into regular oil.

First, here's a CLICKY for the article in a post above. It's well worth a read if you blindly accept Ford's recommended 5w-20 oil.

Second, it's not just Ford's engineers that are involved with what oil gets recommended----------the accountants are closely looking over their shoulders where CAFE is concerned (not to mention the salesmen).

Third, I consider synthetic blends are a lot like being half pregnant. If a blend is good, why not go all the way? The cost difference for the 6 quarts is peanuts in the overall operating cost of a MH. It may even be a cost savings if you then run your MH 5000 miles between changes vs 3000 miles with a blend or dino oil (not to mention the convenience of finishing a trip without trying to find a place that will change the oil in your MH without ripping you off).

Fourth, I'm using the Mobil 1 5w-40 diesel oil which is also spark engine rated. This provides the good start-up lubrication of a 5w oil and the bearing protection under heavy load and high operating temps of a 40 weight oil. It also has more zinc in it to farther protect bearings and camshafts. See this LINK for more detailed info on the Mobil 1 oils. So maybe, it costs me 1-2% of my mpg (that is 6.6 mpg vs 6.5 mpg)!!!!! Cheap compared to dealing with an engine repair before 150,000 miles (my goal with this engine).

Fifth, welcome to this forum-----lots of opinions here (and some of us have actually had some engine and lubrication training and experience)!!!!

If I am going to do synthetic then it is all synthetic and not some BS blend crap. They are just trying to squeeze the middle and make every nickel they can by going after the people not willing to buy full synthetic but want to feel that they are getting something better than dyno oil.

back in the day(when I was working)I attended an oil seminar put on by Mobile at my work site, a paper mill.synthetic is still dino oil no matter how you describe it. it comes out of the ground with the exception of one that is truly made from some exotic material, made in Germany, and has to be labeled as such.the difference is refining. Mobil 1 is and always will be dino oil,it's just more refined than a regular SAE Mobile oil.Look it up.

I have use MC 5/20 synethic blend, quaker state and mobil 1 full synethic oils. I just used Mobil 1 for a 2900 mile vacation trip ending last week. Oil still looks great when I checked it the other day. Its coming out tomorrow. I change the oil every 3000 miles and must say that all of the oils seems to do their jobs very well. Our v10 engine is clean when I make the oil change. I think it is more important to change the oil at 3000 miles especially in a heavy MH. I think any of the oils discussed will protect the engine. I just purchased a quick valve, at the last oil change and I am ready to change the oil again. Walmart had the MC SB 5/20 on sale for $12.00 for 5 quart and 2.77 for a single quart. I also purchased the MC oil filter. Ready to go!
