Most Americans will not be able to reply as they know that hydro means water. Back in the olden days most electricity generated in Central Canada was by water (i.e. at Niagara Falls) and known as hydro-electric power. Even though most of the electricity generated in Ontario is by nuclear or thermal it is still called hydro by most consumers for reasons unknown to me.

And there are still 100's of hydro-electric dams still around, we have one. Seems to me what is "old" is the new "Green", safe and pollution free.
